Afternoon all,

recently bought myself a 1992 Toyota mr2 for £700.

And has got me intrigued by the japanese market and would like to take a slight step up, without spending a fortune.

No more than £2000.

Seen you can pick up the first rx7's pretty cheap and was wondering if any good?

I know the rotary engines arent too reliable, but would it be a good buy for sub 2k?

Or is there a better jap fun alternative?

Thanks

I owned a Mk1 - 1981 with the 12A rotary. In all honesty, it was thirsty and slow. It handled ok, didn't ride very well and they are very small.

I do however love them! If you can find a rare Elford Turbo or consider one with a 13B or newer engine, it would be great fun. You can easily port the engines for a lot more power- the Aussies are amongst the biggest fans of rotary power. They can be made very quick and they do look awesome!

If you wanted jap fun for that price you could be looking at the MR2 turbo?

These cars are slow, rusty, thirsty, and fun. I love them. But an mx5 is a more realistic option if you don't want to deal with classic car ownership. The values of early rx7 are heading upwards in Japan, Aus and NZ. Bound to happen here at some point too.
