Galactic Gear: Time For Tea?

Video games, spaceships and a Top Gear pastiche. Weird and wonderful!

We don't feature either spacecraft or video game footage too often here at PistonHeads, but we hope you'll understand why we've made an exception for this almost pitch-perfect pastiche of Top Gear that is plugging a forthcoming space racing simulation.

Granted, the idea of a far-distant future that still contains a badly-dressed almost-Clarkson cracking gags in front of a laughing studio audience might put many people off the game forever. But it's clear that much effort has been put into getting the tone almost exactly right, if not quite the colour of the presenter's jeans. There's even a "but...." moment.

So reach out your Clarkson Bingo card and see how many Top Gear staples you can spot...

A strange mix of Descent: Freespace and circa 2002 Top Gear which made me feel like a teenager again. Ah, nostalgia.

Sounds more like Quentin Wilson to me.

I've never seen a YouTube video that goes to 2160p.

I really enjoyed that, You can almost imagine a time when something like this could actually happen, though how wings contribute to stability in a vaccuum I am not sure...

The Muray Cup.... Brilliant

I was waiting for "Hammer" to be mentioned and it happened haha.

Reminds me of Wipeout on the Playstation.

lacking ridiculaous over exaggerated analogies*, but pretty good overall.
'A bit like Mars is lacking a decent garden centre.

Well, interestingly, I guess this must be what it must be like to watch Top Gear for someone with no knowledge of cars! A mind bending mix of odd sounding analogies and weird sounding technology. Pretty well done, if not a little odd!

If you notice, the actual Murry Cup Race track shown in the video was actually "In" an atmosphere.

But in General in Star Citizen all of the smaller ships are built to fly in atmosphere as well as in space, so they have wings.

Improvements in Mass allow for better handling as well as acceleration even in space. Just because an object is weightless does not mean it has no mass.

Theres quite a few 4k videos on there now. However, that one wasn't all that spesh in full res. In fact the video itself was a bit turd. Sorry.

Star Citizen is not a space racing simulation, the racing will exist but it will be just one element of the universe.

Horrible facial animation/lip sync but a very good idea.

mass * gravity = weight

IIRC

Yep, F=MA.

Also, why general gassing, when we have a computer games section?

The game is in what could be described as pre pre pre alpha. Lots of work still to be done across the board.

The facial animation was much better when he was flying the ship than before when he was in the studio.

Allicat... we can't stop there...

These people HAVE to see the Aquila ad....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG-82TakEqk

It's a helluva game folks, early, early alpha at this point... but I know I am having a blast with what's available so far.

Also, and this is REALLY important... not all of the ships are single seaters. The Freelancer you saw in that other add is a two man ship, 1 station, pilot and main guns, second station a gun turret mounted in the rear. The turret can be manned by an NPC... or a real player.

The Constellation (this ad is for the dedicated exploration variant, the Aquila) is a 4 man ship. Pilot, 2 turrets, and some versions of the Connie have a small single man fighter it can launch, the P-51 Merlin.

If any of this sounds vaguely interesting to you, I highly recommend you check this game out.

Also, this is NOT a racing game. yes, you can race, there is an entire 'Murray Cup' season you will be able to compete in if you want....

But it's just a tiny portion of this game. Most players probably will never race seriously.
