... that i'm the latest D70 owner
Came down to the price increase was worth it due to the metal body.... but more because its physically bigger and felt better in my hands. As that is where its going to be for most of its life, it made sense to go the Nikon route.
Thanks to everyone's input on the threads as it was incredibly interesting reading them all
Feq quickies...
1) Need a bag/case for it. Don't want anything either expensive or huge... any recommendations?
2) Gonna buy a couple of spare batteries and memory cards in the new year... it is still the best to go to kelkoo etc and search for the cheapest? Are Nikon own brand ones the best?
3) I can't blooming wait!

Batteries can be bought for a few quid on ebay and you can also get your CF cards from there. I have 2 x 1 gig and 1 x 512 CF cards. I also have a 4 gig microdrive but the D70 does not see it despite having the latest firmware HTH

Hi Rico and welcome to the 'D70 Owner's Clud'
Do you want to build a collection of lenses, filters, flashguns etc? If so then look for a gadget bag - Jessops if you like, or internet/eBay if you don't. I got mine from eBay for £25 and it even says 'Nikon' on it
Or if you're sure you're not going to do that, I think Lowepro etc will do one that just holds the body with 1 lens attached.
As for the other bits, this is what I did:
Battery - got a generic one (eBay again)
CF card - as this is rather crucial I got a decent one, Lexar 40X. However that's now been replaced by 80X. The other good one is Sandisk. I wouldn't take chances with 'Happy Shopper' memory: it will be slower and can I trust it?

Rico,
I recently purchased a D70 as well, just prior to going on holiday. Before leaving I purchased two extra batteries, however when on holiday I never used more than one battery in any one day. It seems to last forever. I just charged the battery each night at the hotel. If I were you I would delay the purchace of the batteries until you have have a need, as I feel I have wasted the money.
Just my experience.

Depending where you are going to use the camera and what accessories you have you might want to consider what I got: Its a rucksack from Lowepro and the bottom half is a camera case. What's good is you have someplace to shove lunch/race programme/shower cape/coat/whatever as well as something properly holding your camera. Its goes on your back leaving you both hands free (to hold the camera!) and I can vouch for its "on mountain" performance.
Lowepro even do totally waterproof FLOATING versions if you intend to kayak up the Amazon to the secret source to get exclusive shots of the warrior women's matriarch's 30th birthday party...
Cooool.

Thanks for the info guys! I have no real intentions of stocking up on lenses any time soon as those who know me will know i'm skint! Where I bought it had a few LowePro bags and they seemed good, but were £20-30 for just a basic bag. I'll have a gander online, but this camera case/backpack sounds like a winner...
I'm dying to get my hands on it, but as its for chrimbo i've got to wait
I'm sure it'll be worth the wait!
Any obligatory shots i should post on Christmas day?

With regards to bags - the LowePros are definitely the best.
I have the NatureTrekker AW II - waterproof rucksack holds all my gear and lenses, and comes with small daysack to bolt on - take your pick from here though: www.lowepro.com/Products/Backpacks/ - great to keep everything in and chuck in the back of the car.
I quite like the one that takes a laptop too - I am contemplating it.. ;-)
If however I just wanna pop out with the camera, I have the TopLoad Zoom 1 - not too big (www.lowepro.com/Products/Toploading/classic/Topload_Zoom_1.aspx) and I can fit my 20D with either the 28-135 or the 70-300 DO IS on it. If I want to take just camera and 2 lenses, I take the Camera with lens in this case, and then the other lens in one of their lens pouches and chuck them in a proper rucksack.
The TLZ1 is £20 from London Camera Exchange, but shop around on the web.

Bee_Jay said:What do you think of the NatureTrekker? I'm thinking of getting the ProTrekker soon, as my existing bag (Mini Trekker) is totally rammed full and not that comfortable to carry fully loaded, plus I have to carry a 2nd shoulder bag with the extra stuff that won't fit in the Lowepro!

It's certainly not small, but then it takes ALL my stuff. It is REALLY COMFORTABLE - a proper rucksack - and it offers excellent protection - the AW cover is cool, I mainly use it to sit on!!!
I warn you, it is BIG.
I manage to fit in mine:
Canon 20D with 28-135mm IS lens on
70-300mm DO IS with reversed hood
100-400mm L IS with reversed hood
18-55mm EF-S
85 1.8mm prime
2x teleconverter
580EX flash
Ultrapod II mini tripod
sensor cleaning kit
8 AAs, 2 CFs, spare body battery and various cables.
That's all in the main compartment, leaving the outer compartment and extra daysack for all other sundries (chargers when going on long shoot or trip)
Great - sounds ideal!
Big is good - my main problem is finding somewhere to fit my 300f2.8 lens - it's massive! Add in 6 other lenses, body, flash, filter set, light meter and 2 converters, plus cleaning stuff, batteries and spare film, and I can fill a large Billingham shoulder bag as well as my mini Trekker! As the mini Trekker doesn't have any hip support, it gets quite painful walking with it for any length of time, especially if I've got a heavy bag on one shoulder too, plus tripod!
My only concern is whether I'd be able to get it onboard an aircraft as hand luggage!

I get it on as hand luggage all the time - it is approved as such (the plane icon on the LowePro site).
It is VERY comforable, with loads of padding and hip support. Tripod mount works well.
