Is there a car out there that is not going to give me a four figure bill immediately !.

I love the internet for research , for niggly fault finding and for the fake friendships made over forums of like minded nerds / car enthusiasts. However looking for opinions on cars always leads to catastrophic failure of some component that will cost a great amount of cash to put right.

Examples : x type 3.0 , great value but the transfer box "will" go wrong and cost 1500 quid to fix. The forester , an incredibly reliable car, is going to have impending head gasket failure at any moment. My last car , an accord type r, the fifth gear will break and the cambelt tensioner will snap too.

It goes on and on. Anyway I am incredibly lucky after 13 years commuting 65 miles a day , I have secured a job 5 miles away from my house. This opens up the option of nearly any car !. However I am poor still so am looking less than 3500 quid and do not want to pay 465 pounds tax. I am very stuck and I've searched at nearly every make !

Options :

Another accord type r
X type v6
Forester turbo
Saab aero
St220
Fast audi
Octavia vrs
Old 3 litre bmw
Old school mx6 ! ( a past car too)
Prelude vti

It's limitless , and sometimes to much choice is a curse!

Help ! Opinions ?

The Ford fan-boy in me suggests the ST220, or the "old BMW" out of that list.

never owned one, big thread on here somewhere. Mazda built engines i think so jap reliability and English part costs? I was going to get one but the Focus ST won me over instead. Now i find out that as soon as i drive it to work the liners are going to crack and it'll explode.

Gotta love the internet!

edit - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=28&... st220 thread

Range Rover Classic. Because everyone needs something to cart crap around in at weekends, you won't get stuck if it snows again and they're great fun.

You pretty much sum up one of the problems with the internet.

My car had a problem and I read about other people who had the same problem therefore everyone car of this type will have this problem. It's rife on the net I'm afraid.

Second maroon X-Type has leather, sat nav and a year younger

Grey one has cloth which looks terrible and dated and it's 2001.

Hence why it's £1500 more.

No it won't. You are reading forum posts from 6 years ago that say that (and some of them will be mine). If the transfer box on an X is running now then it has either failed already and been replaced or has never failed and won't now*.

The cause of failure initially was bad quality control at the factory manifested as poor loading on the bearings during assembly. These units will have failed and been replaced under warranty up to a decade ago.

  • Another cause of problems is a leak from the oil seal to the prop shaft drive. This will lunch the box if not fixed fairly quickly and allowed to drip as there is only 2/3 litre of fluid in there, but that is just a wear-and-tear issue. The seal is cheap and easy to replace, and leaks are easy to detect as the oil drips on to the exhaust and can be smelled in the cabin when stationary with the engine running.

If your budget is pushing £3k you should be able to get a 2007 or even a facelift was 80-100k miles for not much more.

2007 is essentially the same car with a few details like more modern steering wheel and better spec. I believe they'd really got there heads around build quality by then so it is a better screwed together car. Not to say an earlier car won't be as smooth running or as good a ride quality as they all even 2001 cars i've been in have the Jag feel.

What hold the X-Type values down is the old Mondeo connection ( solid platform and good car in it's own right), and the fact that XJ from 2003 -2008 can be got for around £4k+ now. An XJ was about 3 times the price of an X-type new

Sorry, but for a 5 mile commute something V8 or even V12 powered imo. Buy something silly.

That, or Alfa GTV V6.

Thanks for the replies, a good example of an st220 is proving tricky to find but looks a good shout. X type wise I guess they need to be assessed on an individual basis and to know what to look for. Also there's a well regarded jag specialist in Macclesfield too. So if it does go wrong better value help is at hand .
