2014 GT-R as a daily driver: Are winter tyres a necessity?

As it says in the title....

Considering a 2014 GT-R as my daily driver.
I appreciate that weather is an unpredictable and fickle thing so maybe I should have asked:

How scary is it on OEM Dunlops in frosty / snowy / slushy / monsoon conditions?

FWIW I'm based just north of Edinburgh.

The 2014 GTR is indeed a great car for performance driving on track aswel as a daily drive.. If you are serious about getting one, head over to http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/

Few things you should take into consideration;

The car is a beast, and will chew up your brake pads if you are driving it hard all the time lol..

OEM dunlops are absolutely crap in the wet ! Although if you are not pushing it to the limits then you should be alright, however it is recommended to get the MPSS tyre set up as they hold much better in the wet and give you a softer ride. (When i first bought my 2012 GTR it was in winter time, terrible rain/snow and i was running OEM dunlops throughout the whole winter.. I had 2 VERY dangerous moments where i almost lost control, car went fully sideways, but managed to save it Has taught me some lessons but i feel once u have done a couple miles with dunlops, change them to MPSS or R888s)

The dunlops are also runflats which give the car quite a rough ride + suspension is pretty stiff so dont expect a very smooth ride when driving through rough patches of road.

It is highly highly recommended that once you have bought the car, you maintain/service it at either Litchfield, SVM, Nissan Middlehurst or Nissan London West or any other well known garage/dealership on gtroc forum.. If you take it to you local Nissan or local garage be prepared to run into several problems

I also feel that once you have got your car, a stage 1 upgrade is NECESSARY ! The new updates from Ecutek, new litchfield traction control and TCM maps completely change the characteristic of the car and you will never want to sell it

FWIW I run MPSS on my S4 (B8) and so far so good. Hoping they'll last longer than the car's first set of tyres - my fronts gave up the ghost after 10k miles.

I take mine off the road in the UK. Having driven over 5000 miles in Europe this summer, it's too frustrating to come back to the donkey tracks of the UK and drive 50mph (if you're lucky!) behind a queue of Nissan Micras.

Sad as it is right now, I'll tax it next April for more European road trips. Maybe it's different where you are. Hope so.
