Crazy stuff considering I started playing at 14! I was considered one of the better lead players when I 15 at my A level college, I don't know what people would have made of those two back at High School!

With regards to where he can go, of course he can learn more, everyone does regardless of age/level of skill, but its more about his composition prowess whether he 'makes it' and has us all buying his albums. It would be great to have some more interesting instrumental guitarists making music, Guthrie's album is long overdue! 9 years almost Guthrie, my CD's warn out!

Paul Gilbert has had a funny old career, his stuff with Mr Big was (imo) not terribly exciting 80s hair metal, though the Gilbert / Sheehan duo raised it up. His band Racer X had some great songs, check out "Technical Difficulties", "Scarified", "Snakebite" and "Viking Kong", then from his solo albums try "Fuzz Universe", "Eudaimonia Overture" and "Will My Screen Door Stop Neptune" - that will give you an idea of his prowess and the sort of range of styles he composes in.

Gilbert's strengths are his groovy phrasing - he is ultra tight and locks in with the drummer amazingly, his incredible picking accuracy, one of the most recognisable vibratos of any guitarists I can name, and simply incredible string skipping, see the mind-boggling "Scarified" outro and the solos in "Snakebite" for examples.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've gone for the "Technical Difficulties" album. I look forward to listening to it...and hopefully learning to play some of it too.

But they are all lacking, as Bruce Lee would put it, emotional content.

I love music but I am not sufficiently a fan of high speed guitar to be able to admire someone who can put one note after another very quickly and not manage to convey anything more than that.

Don't know why you keep re-interpreting what I wrote. For instance, you said I was expecting to find " highly powerful and emotive compositions from 13 year olds on youtube" whereas as what I said made it quite clear that I was not expecting that at all. In fact I'm not expecting any kind of composition from such people at all, let alone anything worthwhile.

There people are all copyists, they don't produce anything new. Maybe they will eventually, though writing music isn't necessarily linked to virtuosity, and frequently the opposite holds true.

Really? Modern Rock Guitar has been dominated by those considered technically top of their field right from the 50s. Chuck Berry, Hendrix, Page, Blackmore, EVH most of the people that dominated a period were considered (in period) as the top dogs technically. Plus pretty much the whole of classical music was pioneered by virtuoso composers.

But lets not get into this st again, its already been made clear who're on the 'gratuitous shred robots' side and the 'nostalgic Rolling Stone readers' side on this sub forum.
