So I had a look at an 06 fiesta today.

I have a number of concerns with the car, and I'm a little torn because I quite like the car. It's got the best looking engine I've seen out of any of the cars I've looked at. It's clear that it's not been rear-ended, the bodywork is fine apart from a couple of minor cosmetic issues. The MOT history looks like it's relatively clean.

There are a couple of niggling issues I have with the car that I'm struggling to get my head around. I'm still new to this game and I really don't know what kind of faults I can let slide, what's important, what's not important and all that kind of stuff.

You see, it's an 06 Fiesta. There's no denying that at all. Except the plate is an 04. I checked the plate online and it is registered to a Black 2006 Fiesta 1.4 Zetec 3dr, which is exactly what I've been to look at today. Potentially a personalised plate that a previous owner was happy to let go with the car.

But... it's had 5 owners, including the current. It's done nearly 80000 miles, and although it is looking very good for it... the oil is low (despite me not being able to spot any signs of serious oil leaks with my very limited knowledge - the engine was bone dry). There's a leak out of the fuel line.

I'm concerned because I really, really like the car. The general opinion is that the Fiesta is one of the more highly regarded superminis, relatively reliable and when they do go wrong they are cheap to fix because they are so common and labour costs are low. But what kind of parts (other than brake pads, brake disks, etc) can I safely overlook the need for repair or replacement with, and what kind of things should I be looking out for if its a lemon?

I'm just having such a nightmare of a time with this whole car buying business!

Just don't. Its a Fiesta there will be countless others the same as it out there. No oil in the engine, and other issues like that, don't touch with a barge pole, you would be an idiot to buy it.

As above. If the seller can't be bothered to check these things before you visit you should ask yourself how lacking their attitude to the car is in general?
