Hi,

I feel like tearing my hair out and like I'm going insane, I've spent the last couple of days trying to figure this out. Basically, I'm selling my current car, but have already purchased a replacement car. So until I sell the first car, I need insurance for both.

What's the best way of dealing with this? I don't know how long it's going to take to sell the first car. Is my only option to buy a multi-car policy, then take one car off it when it sells? I checked with Admiral, who do this kind of policy (and I'm insured with Elephant, their sister company, currently on my first car) and they could do it, but it's mind-bogglingly confusing. They quoted me a price for the multi-car policy with both cars on it, but said when I sell one car, the remaining car would HAVE TO remain on a multi-car policy (even though it would be a single vehicle) and I'd lose the multi-car discount, so the price would go UP! Plus they'd charge me the obligatory "admin charge" to cancel one car. So it's cheaper with two cars, and more expensive with one!

Is there anything else I can do, surely a lot of people deal with this kind of situation.

Many thanks in advance for any tips and advice,

Vlad.

If it's going to be for a couple of days/weeks why not swap the main insurance over to the new car and get short term insurance on the other?

I was in this position earlier in the year. I took out a new policy for the new car and they agreed to match the NCD with my other policy as long as I sent them proof once I had sold the old car.

I then sold the 2nd car and cancelled the insurance, put the refund in my pocket, and send the NCD proof to the new insurance company

When I did this, I just kept my policy on the old car until I'd managed to sell it and left the new car sitting on the drive. Then I swapped it over after the sale and started driving the new one. Easy peasy.

Unless someone stole the new one before you sold the old one...

I've always found insurers to be happy to keep the old car on as an additional car for the short term. First couple of weeks, they've done it free, then a fairly nominal charge for the next couple. I've not needed for longer than that.

Thanks everyone. I'll be speaking to my insurer a bit later today again, and see if they can do it like you suggest, just keeping the old car on the policy temporarily, rather than messing with this complicated multi-car insurance option.

I looked into temporary standalone cover too, but it's ridiculously expensive.

It's worth shopping around for a new insurer for the new car - your current one may not be the cheapest...
