How do you do it?

I was looking at getting a cheap 2nd car to use for tip runs, taking the dog to the park or long distance motorway slogs and looked at 1999-2003 Honda Accords (always had a soft spot for them!)

Even though the car is worth about £500 I still got an insurance quote of £330 third party! and that's with "mirroring my NCB". My S2000 only cost me £100 more a year to insure.

FYI - 28 with 9 years NCB, no points etc.

Any cheaper way of doing it? Thought about switching insurance over then switching back, but the £30 admin fee will add up over a year.

Thoughts and ideas on a postcard, please!

To me it just about keeping the P&J just that. It's quite nice getting in a different car for the weekend than the one I have been driving all week.
Any way man maths has proven beyond doubt that despite the extra cost you are quids in owning two or more cars, it's a no brainer.

Actually in all seriousness I have had my P&J for nearly ten years, it has 80k on the clock and is kept in fairly good nick by most of the time avoiding using it for shopping/ dog walking or going to the stables for my daughters riding lessons.

In that time I have got through 4 second cars totalling about 200k miles, so it would have been long gone by now if that had been my only car.

Look slightly older and go for classic insurance (my '95 mx5 still meets requirements). Around £100 per vehicle fully comp in my experience. Try Richardson Hosken.

Uh, I pay 2 lots of insurance, tax, MOTs etc. Sadly it is the price of having a Chimaera in the garage.

Insurance on my two current cars was less than my last one car, but thats switching from a modified car to standard cars. Limiting the milage in at least one of the cars can make a big difference.

It's my hobby so I don't mind the costs TBH. The Civic does 20K miles + a year and costs me £350ish to insure, the MX5 does 10K miles a year and costs £300ish to insure. They you have 2 x road tax and MOT's etc. Not cheap but I love my cars so I put up with it. At times I've had 3 or 4 at once whihc really was expensive, especially as we live in a 1 bed flat with street parking only.

I have three cars, and frankly the only way I can afford it is by putting them onto my traders policy as personal vehicles, which thankfully is no extra cost. If I had to insure them privately, I doubt I could manage it.

Apart from taxing them all, the costs are relatively low. Maintenance is cheap as each car only does 3-5k pa, and the same goes for petrol.

I'm lookin gat doing the opposite though - My P&J is my daily driver, I don't see the point personally in having a nice car if I don't use it, I just want a shed for the occasional use of a big boot or when I need more than 2 seats! (which is rare) which is why i'm not prepared to pay through the nose for the car or insurance.

I guess I want too much really.

I pay for three lots of everything for three cars, but the clever bit is, I ride a push bike to work to save money biggrin

Insurance works out to about £1200 a year, tax is about £800, maintenance I do myself by and large and isn't much, spend about £200 - £250 on fuel between the cars as dont do a huge mileage.

Stuck with it for now, kind of need three cars unfortunately.

That's the answer. I have 5 cars and 5 bikes and all but one bike are taxed, insured and MOTd. I don't smoke, I don't buy a footie season ticket, I don't pay exorbitant golf club fees - this is what I spend my money on.

I think the most expensive insurance premium for any one of them is about £220 FC, and I do have one which attracts the £500 tax disc, but hey.

I have three cars of my own, TVR, Caterham and the Clio Cup. Try not to think about the insurance! I think they're around about £300 ish for each car, so not too bad. I will probably take either the TVR or the Caterham off the road over the winter.

Edit to add, I earn around an average salary, but I don't really spend my money on anything except my cars!!

Hit the nail on the head there, this is what I always tell people...and I use it in my man maths equation

It's like having multiple wives wink

None of my 3 cars have depreciated since I bought them, I reckon the extra tax/insurance/servicing on them is less than the depreciation on a new motor. That's how I justify it anyway smile

I think a multichannel policy once you've got more than 3 is worthwhile.
I personally have a multi car policy covering an X5, M3 and SLK. But I also have a Ferrari on a classic policy which was cheaper than adding it to the multi car policy and gave me some nice special features to the policy as well (such as letting me insuring anyone (over 25) at any time without incurring extra cost).
I guess it all comes down to total cost through year, as others have said this is my hobby and I don't mind the cost of long as I can afford it. I too don't smoke, don't drink and don't have any other expensive hobbies. If I could get away with it I've have more on the drive, it's just that the wife keeps complaining we have too many cars and not enough time to drive them.

We have three, two would do us, could possibly manage with one. Tax is just under £900pa, insurance a bit less at about £800.
Only one is 'expensive' to run but I can't bear to part with one.
We had a motorhome too but that went a few years ago frown

Get a bit older and the insurance drops. My Volvo T5 has just come in at £180 for me age 35 but three years ago it was £400. My second car is a classic and costs even less. Our third car is a Zafira and is disgusting inside but great for tip runs.

Limited mileage insurance can save a bit of cash too.
