Yes i know its slow, underpowered and all the rest off it but..

Ive read they can suffer from timing chain/tensioner failure. How likely is this? Is this something that will affect a 59plate?

I know but its really hard to tell if it is a very common problem or people just decide to hit the forums when it happens... Confused

Most common fault was coil pack failures on the petrol engines.

The timing chain failure is not a common occurrence.

Dougie (130i).

I had a 54 plate 116i. When I had the car it was 4 years old with less than 35k miles on it and full BMW service history. It had one major failure in the 2 years I had it , this was the timing tensioner. I had it corrected at an independent specialist for less than £500 if I remember correctly. I was lucky than no permanent damage was done as I had spent quite a while trying to start it not knowing what had happened as it was so sudden.
There were a few plus's to this car , as I had gone from a 53 plate impreza the interior comfort and sound system was amazing by comparison and did impress me. It handled well , the 116i not having enough power to really upset it in any way.

The negatives out weighed the plus's though. Apart from the major engine failure the car creaked continuously , I eventually figured out that it was something in the factory fitted body kit that created the noise. Reliability is important to me which is now why I prefer Japanese, these being the only brands to cause me no problems at all.

After I had paid to have my 116i fixed I was told by a BMW service manager ( who I got to know outside work) that he could have got this done for free for me as it was a known problem , so maybe on a 59 its been corrected.

Good Luck!

My old 116i
