Big mileages in a day
Discussion
Yesterday me and my workmate had quite a gruelling day in terms of driving! We set off from our hotel in Glasgow airport to head into Glasgow to finish a small job (15miles). We then headed to Ullapool (North Scotland) for an hours job (230miles). Then came the real jaunt, all the way back home to Worksop, Nottinghamshire (454 miles). This works out around 700 miles in total with 2 jobs in between! Quite possibly the furthest I've been in a day on 4 wheels, other than Le Man in 2007 which I think is about 720.
We shared the shifts (2 hours each) and stocked up on energy drinks and sweets. I landed at home around 11:30pm which wasn't too bad. It got me thinking though I bet people on here could beat that but I would be interested to see how much by. Vehicle of choice was a 104bhp Volkswagen Transporter van (2008) which swallowed up the miles rather well. It could do with about another 100bhp but it did it's job.
Anyone ever done 1000??

Used to drive from Poland to the UK twice a month when i was running our previous business, On my own and it one go stopping only for petrol, We usually go to Greece twice a year which is usually 1000+ in one hit. Energy drinks are a bad idea as they seem to make you more tired but slightly wired as opposed to awake and conscious, A shot of espresson when you start to feel tired seems to do the trick quite nicely. Also smoking helps I find that since quitting my long distance driving abilities have decreased, (Maybe the short bursts of fresh air from having the windows down helps more than the nicotine)

Few years back we did Florence to Weybridge - just over 1,000 miles.Left Florence at 8am, home a little before 10pm.
My wife did the last 100 miles in to Calais whilst I had a nap. I warned her to watch her speed coming up to the port... woke up and saw 125mph on the sat nav

Last year me and my Girlfriend did 1300 miles from Aberdeen to the South of France in a little over 30 hours... including the ferry and having (and i really mean HAVING) to pull over for a nap. We thought we did pretty well. We drank a whole bottle of wine when we got there and did not do anything to a day or two when we arrived!
And this was all done in a relatively cramped and packed to the gunnels S2000.

Nice to London via Dunkirk - about 850 miles over 15 hours - on my own.
Was fried by the end of it.
I found the nicest way to perk myself up was to eat apples. Fruit sugars wake you up.
Car - 300Bhp v6 mr2 with a diesel gearbox. Even got nearly 40mpg doing it.

Quite a few years ago ('92-ish) I did Mantova (Italy) to Hillingdon (Middx) on my own. Started around 5pm Friday evening stopping for fuel only and once for coffee. Got back by lunchtime on the Saturday.
I think that was around a 1,000 miles.
A few years ago I did Marbella to Sunbury-on-Thames, again on my own.
Based on my drive from Italy I thought it wouldn't be too bad.
Left around midnight Saturday, stopped for fuel and snacks etc and got to Sunbury around 7 am Monday morning in time for work (I didn't last the day).
I was more than half dead which surprised me until I worked out after I had done over 1,500 miles in what was effectively a one-er.
The night driving on the Sunday was very challenging, it made a big dent in my overall average speed!
I don't want to repeat that trip without overnight hotel stays in which case I might have enjoyed it.
Every year, except this one so far. Leave north Derbyshire at lunchtime, ferry at Dover to Calais, then drive to Port Grimaud (near St Tropez) through the night whilst kids and wife sleep. Everyone happy, everything including the kitchen sink gets there. And I absolutely love the drive. Hours of fun perfecting travelling at speed, safely with cruise on and at night. Total distance is about 1070 miles.
Done it in a Rover 600 SLDi, Audi A4 V6 TDi, E39 530i, Citroen C5 Estate, Mercedes C220Cdi and an Amarok.

I have twice done 1150 Km in my TR7, Queensland to Bathurst & then back a few days later.
I did 900Km to Sydney in the TR8, then 1200 Km from Nowra back to Queensland a couple of days later.
The inland route is such a pleasant drive, with very little traffic for most of it, you only realise you are quite tired when you stop.

I did 790 miles to Bayonne SW France on my way to the Algarve, I completed the 1535 miles in 25 hours door to door driving a Mercedes SL320. Normally I'd stop north of Bordeaux around a 100 miles sooner, I did the same journey many times in my 20's without a problem and would get there fresh as a daisy. Same route in a Golf Estate Bluemotion this year age 35 and I barely made Bordeaux without needing to overnight.

I also quit smoking two years ago and agree with you, I think it's got more to do with age though unfortunately. Things just take longer to do, you just have to adjust and enjoy the scenery a little more.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
