Does anybody have experience of running a 9-5 2.3t on LPG? Manual or auto? Trying to combine 'want' for big comfy auto estate with 'need' for low buying and running costs.

My mate has a 2003 9-5 aero estate, got LPG installed earlier this year (£1500ish) from a company he has used before. Nothing but trouble since, fueling issues, issues with switching between the lpg / petrol etc. All small problems but annoying and time consuming. Its all sorted now but it did take a few £££'s to put right. The car was mapped by Hirsch before the install so may have been linked.
His mpg is now in the 40's on a mix of motorway and A roads. Mine which is the same bar the remap / LPG currently at 32ish. He reckons he will make his money back within the year so worth it for him.
Not sure that helps much !

I never understand the LPG question. The answer always seems to me to be "diesel".

Short sighted thinking.

Strong engine, many turbo SAAB lumps doing high mileages on LPG, and will run well assuming it is done by someoneone who knows what they are doing using the appropriate components (particularly decent injectors and a reducer or 2 sized for the turbo power).

I'm assuming the 40mpg quoted above is the 'petrol cost equilavent' factor, as science disctates you get less actual mpg on LPG.

And the diesel is far slower, less refined, more costly to buy & maintain and gives you stinky hands when you fill up wink

I've had a few LPG cars and the big engined ones make sense, if you are doing lots of miles it's worth getting a good LPG kit installed, try and get a 90 L tank as the most annoying part of LPG is having to fill up all the time ( most seem to have. 60l tank so you might be getting 200 miles between fill up).

If buying one that's already done make sure it has lots of proof of servicing of the LPG system ideally new filters each year I have found with older cars and no proof of regular LPG system servicing they can be a right pain to keep running right on gas ( but will be fine on petrol).

My Volvo T5 auto on LPG ran really well and the low price of gas made its 22 mpg quite acceptable and no rattly horrible diesel noises from a T5!
