Forward facing scameras....... are they real ones or are they just there to make you slow down.

The only reason I query it, is if they are real how are bikers caught since they have no number plate on the front of the bike, so in theory will not be caught as you can't identify the bike in question.

I think I had way too much time on my hands this morning on the drive past one of these and just started thinking.

Truvelo's
Are real enough and forward facing, bikers are effectively immune.

Bikers are completely immune to them! I while ago a bunch of mates and i decided to try it out. Four of us rode through at 70mph in a 40mph dual carriage way zone coming out of Portsmouth and nothing came through.

Pointless but quality if you ride a bike!

Just don't p 'em off too much, or we'll have to have front plates too. Seeing as they were removed as a safety matter, I don't suppose they'll think twice about making us fit them.

You'll be one of the reasons that new motorbikes from 2006 will have to be fitted with a front numberplate...as proposed by the current Government..

Well done..

I best enjoy it while it lasts then

That's been kept a bit quiet. Bacon slicers back in favour then? Who's for a slice of pedestrian.

Seriously, I haven't heard about this, any links?

I can't find a link, but read about it in an ACPO/DfT report recently at work..

It'll be a windscreen option for faired machines or a 90 degrees to the bike thing fixed to the front left fork...(like the L plates fix at the moment).

Too many bikers have been taking the pees by racing through camera sites that the government are taking them to task over it.

I just think the biking community (a member of which I was until recently) have shot itself in the foot. I mean if you didn't see a cameravan and was hooning it along...then phew..you got away with it.
But to intentionally set a Truvello off for the sake of it..it plain stupid and will affect the whole two wheel community as a whole.

What does anyone think

I've heard (from PH BiB) that plod sometimes hide close to a scamera location, then pull anyone who triggers it. It's reckoned that many scrotes are caught this way as they generally hoon though with faked/no plates, believing themselves to be invincible. Legit drivers are usually released.

I'll tell you what I think Gary. The absolute worst, most garbage, figures that our moronic would be masters have ever had the nerve to try and get away with was that 1/3 of accidents were caused by excess speed. I shall for the benefit of a clear and unsullied argument assume that a) all speed limits are sensibly set, such that all excess speed incidents occur above the statutory maximum for that road and b) that the whole statement is not just a complete load of dingoes kidneys.
Given these assumptions I would like to ask
what about the other 2/3rds of accidents which are currently receiving no attention whatsoever? .... and breath, sorry.
{edit}
Actually I have no real problem with speed limits, or the way they used to be enforced... If a copper could be arsed to pull you and do the paperwork, then you probably deserved it. The potential of automatic licence removal however id IMHO outrageous and counter productive {/edit}

Seems a bit strange given that it really only matters to the scamera outfits which have invested in the South African product. Not many of the others are front facing afaik.

Round my way they can swivel the Truvelo heads (when not vandalised) and have them rear facing. They don't seem to bother though. Hardly worth it, most sites I pass regularly are located on stretches that are mostly at a standstill at busy times. During the rest of the day traffic speeds seem to be about 25 mph top.

If they stick cameras in the housings I reckon they are wasting their time.

On the other hand antagonising the sort of organisation is a scamera crew is tantamount to taunting the Kray twins about their parenthood.

Hard flat sharp edged plate stuck out the side of a bike, I reckon it'll take a lot of pedestrians legs off, but don't let that get in the way of government cash revenue. Seems like Boudicca was onto something

That's okay the pedestrian can claim against the bikers insurance for the injury. The government doesn't care as long as it get's it's 60 quids. It can then justify more cameras and more cut's in speed limits and blame it on the bikers.

Happy Xmas and a Merry (NIP free)New Year everyone

So, could a car driver claim discrimination if caought be a scamera van/truvello? Would they succeed?

they'd say you'd been made "safer" by having paid out your £60.

Does this possible front plate lark mean retro fit, or just from 2006?

I can see a real big deal about "the last of the 2005's" being legendary in their ability to pass un-photo'd !

Retro fit on bikes not suitable, eg it would mess up the handling.. seems crazy. Just another example of the Gov being out for the cash rather than the safety angle. Why don't they just admit that they have another revenue stream and cut the cr@p ? we'd respect them more for the honesty, even if we hated it for the truth.

Let's examine the concept seriously for a moment. I ride an unfaired bike capable of 140ish.

So, someone somewhere has an idea to fit a large plastic plate to it. Presumably fork mounted. hmm, drag. Can you imagine the amount of steer something like that would induce at 140MPH? What a scary thought. And yes, I can quite legally ride at 140 in Europe.

And let's not forget how sturdy it will need to be to resist this drag. Again, the potential for pedestrian injury is very high. They banned front number plates on bikes for very good reasons, they were ripping the guts out of pedestrians years ago.

It's such a stupid idea I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it

Several options available to short-sighted government/EU people:

1) fit limiters to bikes so that the problem of high speed effects are removed (might as well set it to 56mph while we're at it...)
2) fit 2 plates, one each side of wheel, to balance the drag effects
3) fit nice large round edges to plates (as per SVA for kit cars) to protect pedestrians
4) force all bikes to have fairings so there's somewhere to stick the plate
5) plates to be affixed to rider's helmet
6) bikes to have transponders that broadcast the reg no to cameras.

You see, the options are endless .
