Walking back to the house yesterday past some cars waiting at a red traffic light.

In the queue was a rather tidy mid 80s E28 BMW 5 series. I thought if I was the driver I would be rather enjoying that, savouring some German classic.

Behind the 30 year old beemer was a brand new 3 series diesel and it too looked quite tidy.

I then thought I would feel smug looking at the 'boring' repmobile behind me.

But what about the driver of the efficient, refined, tech-laden 3 series - surely he'd be feeling pretty smug too?

I'm wondering the same.

Maybe he's a candidate for the least appropriate username on PH?

C'mon chaps it's not that hard! OP was referring to a situation in which someone can feel smug having a 'nicer/better/etc' car than someone else. But then the other person could very well think they had the 1 up themselves on the aforementioned person. A sort of "smugness is in the eye of the beholder" situation?

I feel smug when:

(1) I'm stuck in a traffic jam and I have my stash of drinks and mansnacks.

(2) I get to motorway services and I see people walk out with their £1.50 bottles of water, when I have 6 of the same bottles in the car for £2 just by planning ahead and purchasing at a supermarket.

But I don't care what you drive. I'm as likely to covet your barge as your premium car.

Feel how you like, problems only arise when someone tells you otherwise.

No, it's simply the irony of a fine fellow who thinks he's "erudite" (and calls himself such) but cannot string a sentence together.

Added, of course, with talk of BMWs and smugness, when he's the original poster of the "List of insurance group 1 cars please" thread...

I think I get him, sorta!
Who should be smugger?

Driver of a Ferrari 328 gts or a brand new one behind him.
I'd covet the 328 in that situation
