First Road Bike, Advice please.

Hi.
Been looking a a road bike. Never had a road bike before, getting on a bit, unfit so was looking for something comfortable. Planet X Pro carbon with Sram Rival caught my eye £799. Then I saw Giant Defy 1 Composite Ultegra for £1099, then I saw Giant Defy 3 for £449. Would the composite 1 be that much better than the Defy 3? Could I even tell the difference? I like the idea of the Defy Composite 1 but would worry less about the cheaper bike being stolen or damaged. Any alternatives? I intended to go to Rutland cycling to try a few out.

If you're just starting out, you won't really notice a difference between the defy composite and the defy 3! I would get the defy 3, some clipless pedals and some nice winter gear and see how much you use it before investing 1k+...
Then after a few months, if you're doing a lot of miles, sportives etc then sell the defy 3 on and throw some money at a nicer, better specced bike.
Have a look at the 2014 sale bikes as well, you can get a lot for your money!

Two ways forward here
Buy the cheaper one (that fits) and use it as a winter training bike. Then buy a nicer summer bike in the spring.
Buy the expensive one wait unlit spring to ride it or regret using it through the winter and end up needing to service repair it and still need a winter bike latter.
If you are new to cycling and at this time of year buy a winter bike and some good cycling clothing so you are warm and comfortable, you will ride your bike more.

Thanks for that.have got the defy 3. Tried it first and it was a lot more comfortable than I expected.as suggested I will use through the winter and if still keen, get something a bit better and save the defy for the bad weather.I would recommend Rutland cycling by the way. Had bad experiences of very reputable cycle shops before when looking for mtb. A lot can't be bothered if you are not spending an arm and a leg.
