..finally got rid of the V8... *Warning diesel Audi content*

So i've had the my Jaguar S-type V8 for a couple of months and i have slowly realised there is a list of "to do" things that is growing quite rapidly..

-Needs new front brakes and pads
-Front end is ratting when going over bumps..
-It needs a new rear bumper as i stupid caught it on a small bollard
-Needs a new tyre as it has blistered for some reason
-Need full wheel alignment doing

And the list goes on.. Not to mention the fact i can only afford to commute to work and then park it up at the weekend as i have used up all the weeks petrol.. its time to go.

I was looking at all sorts 350Z's, Citroen DS3's, Honda CRZ's, MINI's and then i went to look around fords of winsford.. I decided to get the keys to an Audi A3 1.9tdie Sport! I don't know what happened in my head but i liked it??? Its not fast, it sounds very diesely but it seems i have become blinded by the fuel economy and the nice interior and the badge... where do i hand in my membership!


I secretly can't wait to be able to afford to go out with my Mrs and be able to go further than 5miles away and to not have a hassle free car ownership experience.. hopefully!

In a similar vein to you OP, I've recently sold my VX220, so I'm just using my shed full time (2006 1.2 Corsa)

And I like it - it does 50mpg, starts every time, doesn't leak and the heater works. I don't flap about taking it on short journeys and park it wherever.

I'm finding it hard to justify getting something else just to drive to work and back in to be honest

Without trying to scare you check it doesn't have a BXE engine code prefix. Seem to be problematic. I hadn't realized when I bought my 1.9 TDI Passat based on engine reliability, thankfully for me it was an older engine code.

Well, I hope this one works out for you! You seemed quite taken with the S-Type but I suppose a truism of V8 ownership is that you can only accurately assess your attachment to them when you're taking them to the pumps week in, week out. If you can stomach the bill, I would highly recommend V8 travel though it must be noted that I'm not a particular fan of the S-Type.

That said, my thoughts on buying a big, old petrol engine or a modern diesel are 'pay a bit more, now or pay a lot more, later'. Driving modern-ish diesels all day at work, I know my preference is to be risk averse and stick with petrols!

Save the £10 or whatever it does less than a petrol equivalent each week and put it aside for when the turbo/dpf sts itself..... The few hundred pound saving each year in fuel just isnt worth imo unless your doing 25,000-30,000 miles per year. But best of luck with it OP!

I see this thread has bought the diesel bashers out in force again.

I can see / respect op's reasons for getting rid of the jag, personally I wouldn't have bought one in the first place. A nice big v8 isn't too everyones tastes, I would like one (a v8) but I can see them becoming a bit of a pi$$ take if you cover any real milage.

I have never seen a diesel blow up because its been used on short trips, my parents have run diesels only covering low miles and with the exception of a egr clean every now and again theyve been fine.

also jags aren't really known for theyre reliability, if you want a lazy unstressed v8 im sure there was plenty of other choices.

I've had diesel A3s for the last 7 years and have to say, I've not had a single spot of bother with them. (being stopped for speeding many times doesn't count)


As mentioned before, they do need a good run every now and then so if you use it for toddling about during the week, give it a good blast at the weekends so the DPF doesn't get clogged up. Also, use a tank of ultimate diesel every now and then too, might just be me but it does help the fuel economy and drivability of the car.

I average around 20,000miles a year and they are a very reliable workhorse which I've used for many things, toddling around town, blasting up and down the motorway on midnight airport runs from Glasgow to Heathrow and back (which I managed on 1 and a 1/4 tanks of fuel) and as a small van with the back seats folded down and full to the headlining with junk and boxes.

Basically, treat it right and it'll run and run, treat it like crap and it'll break every 2min.

Thanks all for your concern. Although i don't a very high mileage. The car will be used for a weekly 100mile round trip to my suppliers on the motorway and my daily commute is high speed country lanes where the car should easily get hot enough to stop the DPF clogging up. It certainly won't be idling around town.

I will keep this for a few years.. i have too due to finance. Then hopefully my wage will have hopefully have swelled abit and i can get something interesting again.

I must admit im pretty excited about getting it!

Didn't realise that Audi still made the 1.9 at this age.

My A3 is also a 2009 and has a 2.0 common rail 170bhp engine.

Looks cool though and if it saves you money, not a bad thing!

You say that but it will cost at-least 900quid to get the Jag how i would want it. Something i cannot afford to do at the moment with the fuel it was drinking also. A set amount monthly for the Audi with much cheaper monthly fuel bills works out way cheaper and easier to manage. The Jag has 101,000miles and the list of things to do has grown since i have owned it.

I will get a toy when i've got some money in the bank but unfortunately escaping my parents into my first house and growing the family business is far more important at the moment.
