Folks,

About to leave the car for 4 weeks- last time I did this it drained the battery as the alarm would go off occasionally. Alarm problem now sorted, however I'm wondering whether disconnecting the battery might be advisable- obviously it no longer has the alarm sounding as a drain, but I'm not sure how much of an effect this had.

Car is a 1999 M3 with a decent Bosch battery which I would rather not kill if possible!

Even if the alarm isn't sounding it will have sensors that will be active while it is armed, they may even use the same amount of power continuously.

Aftermarket alarms in particular can be bad for draining the battery, so if it were me I'd just disconnect the battery and lock the doors manually.

As above, it's not the alarm occasionally sounding (occasionally, one hopes...) but the constant drain from so many electronic items that modern cars are fitted with.

Disconnect battery, but while no biggie, check if there is any procedure to follow post-disconnection, ECUs can forget fueling maps etc and if applicable may need to re-learn.

One other thing check for any procedure re disconnection, too, otherwise alarm may go off if it has it's own integrated battery.

My 996 will completely drain it's battery if left idle for 2-3 weeks, and 2-3 days if left unlocked - and battery must be disconnected with key in ignition otherwise alarm will sound.
