MOT certificate discrepancy?

Looking to buy a car, and while looking through the documents something caught my eye. The registration on the MOT cert, and the reg on the car wernt the same! The reg on the car is ***E** and the reg on the document is **C**. The VIN numbers are the same, but I would have though that with the new computer system it would have flagged this up and not allowed the VIN and reg to not match? Could it be a simple typing error, or is there more to it than meets the eye?
