I went to pick my SLS up from AMG on Friday (finally!) and whilst there I was show round the new AMG GT. Unfortunatly they wouldn't let me take pictures (or drive it....you've gotta ask, right? laugh). Anyway, heres some of my thoughts on the car and how I'd compare it to the SLS from the 15 minutes or so that I had to look around it.

Looks wise, it's as you see in the pictures - some cars look better/worse in person but the pictures you see represent the GT very accurately. This is either good or bad depending on your thoughts of it....I was hoping it would look a bit better but the design is growing on me. It's noticeably smaller than the SLS though, but it's a very contemporary design that will look sharp on the road. It's not naturally pretty, but then neither is the SLS. However, the older car does remain more distinctive and, good news for us SLS owners, the newer car doesn't seem to immediately date the SLS which I think will grow into a relatively timeless design.

Inside though, the design does leave the SLS for dead - it's very funky, modern and beautifully constructed. The seats look fantastic and are very supportive, although to be fair the SLS's are also very good in this respect (probably even more so actually), but they just don't look as good as the GT's seats. The nav screen integration in the GT is also better than in other new-age Mercedes too. The SLS's saving grace are it's instrument dials where the design and typeface still look far more exciting than the more ordinary items in the GT.

They also let me start and rev it up so this was my first experience of AMG's new 4.0 bi-turbo eek

Based on a couple of minutes listening to it, I think we have nothing to worry about in terms of sound - it sounded pure AMG; deep, burbly and very loud smile Nothing about it appeared to be contrived, fake or muted. Phew! As good as the 6.2? Without a side by side comparison it's hard to tell and I suspect it would always come off second best in such a comparison but in isolation, it sounded great to me.

Finally, as mentioned on the SLS thread, AMG's view is that the GT is intended to be a totally different prospect to the SLS. We all know it's going to be sold in a different price point but they also reckon it'll be a much higher volume and therefore less exclusive product. They certainly seem keen to retain the SLS as an iconic halo kind of car, even though it's no longer in production. Sounds good to me smile
