Hi all

I'm looking for a few lenses to use on my 300D,

At the moment I have the EF-S 18-55 kit lens and a 75-300 IS, the lenses them selves are OK, but nothing special.

I find the 18-55 to take too long to focus, it's not the later USM type also the zoom action has never really felt that smooth in use.
The 75-300 tends to look a little soft over 200mm but otherwise it's not a bad lens for what I do.

The lenses i'm considering offer more of an overlap in terms of range, these being the

17-40 L f4 and the 70-200 L IS

I'm also wondering if the new EF-s 17-85 IS would be a better choice?

Has anyone used the 70/200 L on a 300d ?, I'm a little worried about the weight of it on the camera.

thoughts and opinions are welcomed along with tips on where to get the best deal

I borrowed one for a week, can't say that I found it too heavy but I wouldn't like to use it for a long period. In terms of picture quality it was outstanding, if I had the money I would buy one tomorrow.

Hi Chim Girl

I don't suppose you have any shots taken on the 300d/70-200L?

As you are aware the 70/200 costs a huge chunk of cash, so I need to buy right first time as I won't be able to upgrade the camera just yet

Usedmy 70-200 L IS on the 300D while on holiday, plus at mph'04, and lots of other times in fact....you certainly feel the weight, but its not an issue really.

Hold the camera by the lens tripod mount and you're fine. Hold the camera using just one hand, and you're asking for trouble.

Great combination the 300D and the big lens. Even better when its attached to the 20D

Reviews of the EF-s 17-85 IS are not good. Got the Tamron 28-75 2.8 instead and will continue to use the 18-55 for missing 18-28mm range, which as long as its stopped down is pretty good.

Heavily reduced for the web.

Lucca, thanks for the images

Fantastic shots as ever!

The 20D is a non runner at the moment because i've decided to build a decent collection of glass which can be employed on a new body as and when more funds allow

The 300D isn't a bad camera and at the moment it's happily showing up my lack of talent behind the shutter.
before posting this i've been over at fredmiranda checking out some of the reviews on the 2 other lenses, as you say the 17-85 IS does get some bad reviews, but the 17/40 L seems to be where the smart money goes.

now where did the wife leave her Ccard

Both fine on the 300D and very good. The 70-200IS is a real corker, if you're talking about the F2.8 one (which you must be as the F4 one isn't IS). As a bonus the 1.4X and 2X extenders work fine on it.

I wouldn't worry about the mm gap between the two. That range is easily filled by using your feet a little.

Of all the lenses available, which lens would you say is the best all-rounder?

I've just bought a new 20D and am needing to tell my family which lens they should aim to buy me. I'll be buying more later, but currently I just want one lens that can turn it's hand to many tasks AND not be hugely expensive.

Any recommendations would be gratefully received

Phil

It is indeed the 2.8 i'm looking at, I just need to try and find somewhere that will ship it as a warranty repair/gift/donation etc

After reading fred miranda for most of the night i've decided it's going to be the 17-40 L and the 70-200 L IS
just for fun i'm also going to add in a 50mm for people work.

Andy, if your family want to buy a lens for a deserving person, i'll take the 70/200 please

28-135IS I guess. I ran with just that one lense for months. If I can take only one lense with me and I'm shooting a variety of things, it's the one.

Yeah, everyone bangs on about having a cheap 50mm in the bag. Bet you never use it

Doh! can you point in the the right direction for a EF-S 17-85IS review. I've just (last week) ordered a 20D kit with this lens. I'll send it back unopened, if it's crap.

I'd be interested to read a bad review also - I bought a 20D with 17-85 in October and have acheived some fantastic results with it.

Review of the 18-85 can be found here:

www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=222&sort=7&thecat=27

These are comments from actual owners, rather than a magazine review.

Cheers luca,

An interesting read and not as bad as I imagined it was going to be. The main criticism seems to be the value for money aspect. They all say its significantly better than the basic 20D 18-55 lens kit. There does seem to be some problems down the bottom end but doesn’t seem to be universally slated. I still think it will serve me as an everyday lens. I expect I’ll get something wider and something longer for specific holidays or events throughout the year. I’ll let you know what I think assuming it arrives…
