Hi All,

I might be getting flamed here but Im prepared for it, haha. Have much looking around and thinking what i want next a GT3 gen 1 is what i want, but i cant afford it!

I see plenty of 3.8 997 C2S Manual's around with full GT3 kit (front and rear) on them and i think when they have the GT3 wheels and suspension right they look great.

I've never driven a 997 C2S, im wondering if you guys can tell me how they perform on track, what mods would be need to make it more of a weekend blaster but also track (Ring) machine.

Suspension, Brakes, Seats, Geo.

They have 355hp / 275lbft stock, what are the best mods to get this up?

In essence Im trying to make my own version of the GT3 for maybe half the cost. With 2006 3.8's going for £26K with GT3 kit, im thinking for another £6K i can sort the suspension / upgrade brakes etc.

Anyone done this etc?

Anyone know the key differences between the GT3 and C2S?

Thanks
Jay

buy a 997.2 GTS and fit some ohlins, some cups 2 to it with a nice geo motul 660 and some RS29 pads.

the standard car has a advantage in the shorter ratios :-)

not a GT3 track car, but a nice car you can use day to day and then track if you so wish.

or buy a Cayman R :-)

Thats mate, been reading alot of comments on various forums about adding headers, cats, exhaust and remap to the 997, along with more aggressive pads, and someone good suspension with GT3 Geo, makes it a really good road and track car. If i add some GT3 seats, go abit light weight, GT3 wheels and sticky rubber, should make it a more track focused car, but still great on the road for the now and ALOT cheaper than the GT3.

Or an i way of the mark here?

depends your starting point, I would not want a 997.1 911 only in GT3 form.

the GTS is 414 bhp or 404 something (I forget) but still 60k , it don't really want for much, geo, tyres and a set of shocks will be a very fast car road and track.

buy one with a aero kit and you get the GT3 looks you are after.

you could say take a larger loan as GT3 are safe money and buy a 997.1 car, it's like money in the bank.

running costs on these types of car are circa 1k a track day though all in.

hence why I said buy a Cayman R, it works out the box and is 40k

Yeah dont want to really take a loan though, 997 C2S and the bits i want i can do without a any finance, but then i know whilst the 997 will continue to drop, although slowly, the money on mods i wont get back, where as the GT3 no mods required and is going up rather than down.

Tough call.

Cayman R, whilst have seen these flying and read up on how great they handle, i just love the 997 GT3 looks.

RPM technik do just that-here's a little film about their demonstrator;

Here's the PH review;

I've got to say it's something that appeals to myself as well for my next car. A poster on this forum did a lot of modifications to his car and went by the name of Gibbo but I haven't seen him post in quite some time, he may have sold his car?

Thanks, the more i look at it the outlay is alot less than a GT3. Pretty much half the cost. But maybe not half the car.

Was just working that out, 997 will continue to depreciate, the mods, you can pretty much right them off, where as if i get a 997.1 GT3 the value will continue to climb.

Though call, loose money but cash buy or have the real thing and have to finance it but it will likely appreciate.

Swaying more towards the GT3 now :s

There is absolutely no guarantee about values doing anything in the future though is there?

At the moment GT3s are performing well, but when the bubble bursts who knows what will happen.

I think you really need to define exactly what kind of car you want. A standard Carrera S will be plenty fast enough and capable on a track for the majority of keen drivers. You will be a very good driver if you can get 10/10 out of one.

But at the other end of the scale, if you are looking for something very compromised for the road and virtually race ready, thats a very different proposition!

A fast daily road car for the odd track day, or a serious hard as nails track slag?

You seem to be suggesting about £32k budget?

How about a 996GT3 for £28500.

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

It has a little bit of er...intersting history, bit if its more of a track car you are after then it might fit the bill?

I think you need to first answer the follow - do you need a 911? And does it have to be a 997?

Otherwise, as said, you can find other cars in the Porsche range in budget that can do the job.

If you are insistent about the 997 route, then as mentioned, remember an engine rebuild should be factored in just in case. If you want to modify, i'd hunt every 911 forum and try and find a car with it done, plus ideally with a load of mods done.

RE: engine mods - a load of money for barely any gain and you will probably make the car too noisy for track work with aftermarket manifolds and exhaust systems.
