My FIL passed away last night on a flight to Hong Kong which has come as huge shock, to us all - there have been loads of questions re: next steps already, including loads of questions from the OH about what happens to his car.

I'm guessing that now he has passed away, this will mean his car insurance will be no longer valid (no longer any policy holder), so what happens now? I assume that we need to inform his insurance company? Will we need to get a policy on his car, or can we have his policy transferred to another driver just as a stop gap? Do we need a copy of the death certificate to do this?

With the recent(ish) rule changes regarding continuous insurance, we don't want to create an issue and as the car is still taxed, it must be insured. Should we just SORN it?

With regard to selling it (MIL can't drive), do we have to wait a period of time, or can it be sold straight away and if so, who signs the V5, which is in his name?

Are there any other things that we need to think about relating to the car?

All advice as always, greatly appreciated

If he's left a will whoever is named as executor in the will should deal with this.

I was the executor of my fathers will a few years ago. As far as I can remember the car will continue to be insured, I believe the insurance company added my name to the policy for a week or two so that I could move it and sell it.

Also note that from 1st October if the car has a new keeper the road tax cannot be transferred and would normally be refunded to the current keeper if at least one month remains.

Sorry for your loss.

My FiL passed away in June. His insurers were happy to issue monthly cover notes, upto a maximum of three, from when he passed.

I sold his car, on behalf of the estate, two weeks before the last one ran out.

Thanks all, sounds like I need to get on the phone to his insurance co. tomorrow to see what they say, I then need to sort through the rest of the paperwork out for it.
