Went to pick my car up from a gearbox specialist today having received a quote and paid for diagnostics over the phone earlier in the day. To my surprise as we're a mile or so away I see my car, 2 up, travelling not slowly in the other direction..

When we got to the garage obviously my car wasn't there and I explained why I was there and what I'd seen. The mechanic I spoke to said they had gone to pick up a car from a nearby Audi garage and it was a test drive.. I was then told to "not look so disgruntled" and that he "doesn't take kindly to accusations". I saw no benefit to an argument so took the car when it arrived (driven by someone who knew little of the job the car was in for).

In my opinion they were using my car as a pool car for their convieniance and I don't feel like trusting them with my car let alone paying them the best part of 2k for a gearbox rebuild.

Am I over reacting or would you be as "disgruntled" as me?

Vote with your wallet and take future business elsewhere and tell people local to you of this experience etc etc.

Good garages come on recommendation

It could have been a genuine test drive, is it a garage you have used before, I suppose it's two jobs in one, collected one and road testing yours.

I'm with you. Make a point of telling them all data is logged and stick a post it note with mileage record on the dash before you leave it. The s will joyride if you let them.

Sounds to me like you were bullied into backing down (doesn't take kindly etc). For that alone I would take my custom elsewhere.

This - Tell them you know where they were, what time it was, how fast they were going, what gear they were in and how much throttle they had on at the time, they realise you're not kidding and they behave themselves. It does help if you have the data to back it up smile

The job of diagnosing the gearbox had been done, paid for and the car was waiting collection. I see no reason to test drive it again and non was offered.

Anyone know a decent automatic gearbox specialist in the south oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire area?

I always dreaded leaving my Cosworth at any garage ,worried they'd be going for a ride in it because Cosworth.

By a massive coincidence I saw it being driven, quite quickly, by a mechanic whilst it was un taxed.

This wasn't the garage I had left it with but a main dealer that was only MOTing it.

I wasn't happy but didn't make a fuss.

+1

A busy garage will test drive it but this may involve picking up/dropping off etc.

Very naive to think your car won't be driven when it's in being repaired it's no different to you driving it ( unless they crash it, And they didn't).
