Tyre pressure sensing

Anybody recommend a TPMS?
Just received my replacement tyre from the factory. The invoice has not arrived yet so I don't have to suffer the pain until tomorrow.

A friend has sensors on his race car trailer. IIRC, they came from a Large Truck supply house. Try your local caravan/HGV factor.

Sensors did not prevent the wheel bearing from dissolving though. Nothing like seeing a wheel pass you at 65 mph and saying,
"Doesn't that look like one of yours, Ed?"

I purchased a set from "Smartire" - admittedly it is still in the box since I am far from finishing my car but I met the guys from the factory at a SEMA show a few years back and they sounded very knowledgeable -also because I am sometimes prone to being chauvinistic since this is a Canadian company based in British Columbia.

Did you buy the standard item or did they modify it for you?
Reason I ask is that the 'smatire' is the only one I have found so far but the tech spec says it is factory set so it "Alerts" at 22psi and goes into "Warning" at 18psi which will not work for us.
I have not found anything saying these settings can be altered.

Hi Steve,

I called the factory and spoke to their technical person before the purchase because I was similarly concerned. He assured me the the factory settings can be reprogrammed "as desired".

I have included the information provided in the manual together with their acronyms for your use below.

The unit montors cold pressure (CP) as reqd. or is factory set to 30PSI

The (Pd) pressure status alert is factory set at plus/minus 5PSI but can be set to a low of 2PSI or a high of 20PSI

The factory set low pressure alert (PA) is set at 18PSI - hence my concern also - however I was told that this also can be reset.

The low pressure warning (LP) comes on at 10PSI or "as desired"

The high temperature warning (SL) is set at 140F and cannot be modified


I cannot give you a definitive answer until I mount it and use it on my car which is some time away, you could however, email them or call their UK agent to determine what parameters cannot be altered.

Can you work out from the manual if the setting changes are done on the receiver in the car or do the sensors have to be set up before they are fitted in the wheels.
The former would be the ideal.

Will talk with the UK rep in the new year.

The tyre pressure is sent to the display and the threshold trips are set there.

"SmarTire’s Full Function Displays add additional features to the Basic Display. The Full Function Displays provide digital tire pressure and temperature data as well as enabling the driver to adjust warning levels for specific needs. Driver’s can scroll through each tire position and learn the pressure, temperature and pressure deviation readings for each tire."

Hi Steve,

The sensors (transmitters) are sealed units and cannot be opened - they need to be replaced if the battery dies and new ones purchased. All settings/ programming is done inside the car on the head unit.

The transmitters are activated by the centrifugal motion of the wheel and are otherwise not transmitting to conserve battery life.
