996 Turbo values seem to be on the up at the moment.

Low mileage - low owner examples are into the £30k,s already. I enquired about a coupe at £32k last week to find it had been sold within 24 hours.

Conversely 997 Turbos are still depreciating and a decent example can also be had for mid £30's.

Will 997 Turbo values continue to fall ? Can a 996 Turbo ever be worth more than a 997 of similar mileage and condition ?

What's the best buy ?

Both are great cars.

They are both superb buys and will not depreciate any further. The only way is up.

In the long term the 997 turbo DFI will be the cheapest car.

It's basic supply and demand, that's it.

Thats a key driver, but its not as simple as that.

As a 997t owner of 3 years who had a 996t for two happy years before I can't for the life of me see why anyone would have the 996 over the 997. There is no area in which it is better and many in which it is inferior. The 996t is a great car but there would need to be a big disparity in price not to take the 997t.

I wonder whether you are comparing like for like, ie a low mileage good spec 997 with the same 996.

When I bought my 997 there was a 10k premium between it (2008, 28k miles, good spec, black manual), and a similar 996 with say 40k miles, 2003/4

I think both will bottom at around 35 and good low mileage manuals may go up in time, personally I think the 997 will still command a small premium but who knows in this crazy current market

Subjectively I prefer the 996's steering feel, simpler and more RWD-feeling 4 wheel drive system, but even as a 996 owner I tend to agree with you. It's nice that the 996 is a little simpler, in terms of fewer weaknesses like the 997's variable geometry turbo actuators, but I'm clutching at straws here!

Would echo most of this. Maybe as they have gotten older good example 996 Turbos are becoming harder to come by and so sellers commanding a bit more for a well looked after and documented car? I always thought that at mid to high 20's these were really the performance bargain of the century.
I loved my 997 turbo and still miss her and I keep a close eye on the market and maybe its me but I would find it worrying buying a 997 Turbo for mid 30's not that good bargains cant be had occasionally but even with the gen 1's pretty much bullet proof Mezger things at 8 years old now for earlier cars, water pumps actuators etc can start to pile on the costs..and thats forgetting brake discs, pads and the usual rads that often need sorting. I know that the Gen 1 with its Mezger and decent manual box is a real winner amongst enthusiasts but it appears to me the gen 2 car is holding pretty well too at the moment around early to mid 60's? Maybe thats because the 991 Turbo is still 120/130....

Objectively, the 997 is probably better in all respects, but that is probably true of every generation of 911, but as every generation of 911 gets further away from the original, and misty-eyed people crave nostalgia, the prices of the older cars increase.

The 996 turbo is objectively far better than the 964 turbo, but 964 turbos are far more expensive.

I predict that, in 10 years time, 996 and 997 turbo values will be on a par, with price being far more dependant on history/condition/spec/provenance than on which generation of car it is

but if you had 2 cars, one 996 one 997 that were both manual, black/black, decent spec and same condition/history would you expect them to be the same price?

Production numbers have a huge influence on values....I have no idea how many 996 Turbo's were made compared to 964's but I imagine it's multiples. Then there's also the fact that I think the 964 Turbo is just about my favourite looking Turbo...especially in 3.6 form!

In 10 years time (or mabye a bit more), yes.

There was a time when a 996 turbo and a 993 turbo, both manual, black/black, decent spec and same condition/history were the same price.

Comparing a 64 or 93 turbo to 96 turbo is pointless and wrong, totally different cars and markets, however, 96 & 97 are absolutely comparable and I too wouldn't take a 96 over a 97, assuming both cars are comparable condition etc I would expect somewhat of a gap to always remain between values, the slightly higher being the 97....smile

Same here. 7-10k about right (depending on baseline values of course).

I believe that an averagely nice 996 will eventually sit at around £20 - 22k for quite a long time and a 997 £27 - £29k

The 991 will eventually exert pressure on the 997 in the same manner.

Probably in medium term the only real gains in values would be inflation linked i.e. very ultimately based upon what a new Turbo 911 ends up costing.

In the long term when legislation bans the production of anything that does not do 90mpg+ or the electric equivalent - who knows. I suspect that the age of the supercar is at it's peak and in 15-20 years time no-one will be making them as we know them to be today, and as long as we can still fuel them, who knows what today's monsters end up being worth?

yep that was kind of my thinking - 996 and 997 are pretty comparable, whereas 964 (single turbo, old school charm and lag, iconic looks) and 993 (4wd, tt, last of air-cooled) are very different machines from 996/997 and each other and produced in less numbers. 991 different again as has turned into electric steering PDK tech-fest

As a 996TT owner my view is the 997TT is the better car in pretty much every respect and if I didn't already have the 996TT I'd be buying a 997TT right now. However I don't feel I need the improvements enough to take a hit on selling one and buying the other, so I'll be happy with what I've got smile

997 better in every way but 996 older and getting rarer. Eventually 996s will be worth more.
