Cycle Superhighway 2 Improvements

For London people only I’m afraid (but obviously other people can comment), TFL have launched the consultation on the CS2 improvements along the A11 (Mile End / Whitechapel). I urge people to have a look at the plans and comment. I’d be interested to hear people’s views too

What's with the chicanes?

The problem with these schemes is that there's no realisation that the hardcore racer / courier types will be doing double the speed of shopper types. It's narrow, and has curbs - so the couriers will use the road and rage will ensue..,.

I think you are talking about the bus-stops. They are planning to put the stop itself on an island so that cyclists don't have to pull out in to traffic to get past stationary buses every few hundred yards. A simple solution to an tricky problem (IMHO).

It's important to remember that these cycle lanes are designed to make cycling an option for more people. If you are a hardcore racer / courier type who is happy "running the bulls" with the traffic then they won't be ideal for you but that doesn't make them wrong. They are designed so that children can cycle to school, women feel confident swapping a bus-pass for a bicycle, the elderly don't need to rely on others to get them about. It's a step towards being more like Copenhagen or Amsterdam.

The more people (of all types) that we can get on bikes, the better this city will get for all of us - even the fast guys.
