I am clearly rubbish at driving economically, as is my wife.

Current car: Volvo XC60 D4
Official MPG: 62.8
BSR+Wife MPG: 40.0

That's not me driving like and idiot, though, its mostly done with children in the car so not neccesarily obeying speed limits but not tearing around either.
Best ever journey on a motorway as been about 43.

WHo else is rubbish?

Book: 54mpg.

Actual: 44.8mpg, driving like I've got a newborn baby on my lap.

Mine is actually pretty damn close.

Car: BMW 125i Coupé
Official MPG : 34.9
Current Average: 31.7

Current MPG has been measured by FuelLog on Android. Say what you like about N/A cars, they get bloody close to their official figures, and similar real world figures to the downsized turbos that have replaced them. Progress eh?

Ive tried out of curiosity for a little while and seem to be able to get nearer to 47 driving as economically as I possibly can, but I cant maintain it for more than a few minutes.

Depends how where I'm driving.

My car's official combined figure is 41mpg. On my commute (which is four miles of stop-start traffic) I get about 30mpg. At normal motorway speeds, I get about 45mpg. On a spirited long cross-country drive, I get about 40mpg. Best from a tank was almost exactly 50mpg. I think the car's official figure is about right for someone trying to drive economically in reasonably mixed conditions.

In the wife's Skoda, I can can just about touch the official mixed figure on a slow motorway journey. However, despite it being a vastly less economical car, we actually average better economy in the Skoda than the Lotus because it gets used for longer trips.

As a counterpoint:

Current car: Volvo C70 D5 6MT with an MTE remap to 225bhp and 480NM
Official MPG: 42.8
DME123 MPG: 42.4

It might be the way I drive but I tend to get close to the "official" MPG in most cars, with the exception being a Diesel Jaguar S-Type that was terrible. FWIW I'm not Mr Lightfoot either wink I did drive like a total ponce for a full tank and averaged 62.3mpg, all motorway driving and sticking to 60MPH. Hard work, that was.

Book figure is 33mpg, I get around 30, and that's not exactly driving gently... so that's pretty accurate actually.

.
My previous XC90 I was also within 1 mpg or so. I've had a few cars where I am not that far off.
THe ones where I am the furthest off is cars that seem to have been designed to be class-leading economy-wise.

Passat TDi 170 bhp manual: book 60 MPG. Real 48 MPG.
Passat TDi 177bhp DSG All-Track: book 48 MPG. Real 38 MPG.

So that's 20% less MPG than the VW claimed "Combined" values, despite predominantly long journeys on dual carriageways and motorways. That's quite a lot of extra money over the ownership period or lifetime of the car.

Suzuki Swift Sport

Book 39mpg
Actual 32mpg

Amarok 180 Manual

Book 37mpg
Actual 32mpg

Alfa 156 V6

Book 32mpg
Actual 19mpg

I'm quite happy with the Swift and Amarok as they get driven and are close enough to their book averages. Whoever booked the Alfa at 32mpg must have measured it falling off a cliff at a steady 56. This is my third Alfa V6, it's probably as good as the previous ones, though they were 3.0, but it is pretty dreadful.

Car: BMW X3 3.0d

Actual MPG: 28

This number takes into account that I do spend time at tick over when marshaling on rallies.

I'm a bit confused,we went to Devon on the weekend,done 247 miles used 50 quid diesel,at 131 per litre
My Land Cruiser Auto best figure is 23mpg I think we did more than this figure.
The fuel light came on half a mile from garage when my wife put fuel in, we took the mileage when the light came back on.
Driven between 65 = 75 on motorway, my wife was driving so she was taking it easy..

Renault Twingo GT

Official 49mpg
Normal driving 43mpg
My usual driving 40mpg
Best achieved 49.6mpg

It is possible, just requires a lot of restraint and forward thinking. Worth noting that the aircon was on for ~90% of my best result, so conventional thinking would suggest I could have got more out of it.

I'm just about spot on - 51mpg book, ~50.5mpg rough calculation (Passat 2.0 TD). This is for a daily commute (round-trip ~30 miles) of mostly motorway/dual-carriageway with only a few miles of lightly-congested traffic, and driving in a fairly non-hoonish manner.
