any advice appreciated!

My Audi 80 ('92 model) has a problem with the wipers - I can use them on the fastest speed but the intermittent and "one wipe" speeds don't work at all.

Big D's already tried swapping the whole wiper motor for a replacement - still get the same problem. He's also changed the relays to no avail.

The problem started when I was using them on the intermittent speed and I saw smoke coming out of the steering column by the wiper control switch.

It was literally a puff of smoke then the intermittent speed stopped working. A day later the same thing happened when I used the one wipe speed.

It seems as though the fastest speed doesn't use any resistors anywhere to regulate the speed hence why I can still use them on the fastest speed with no problem.

Is there a separate wiper control unit somewhere? Dan's had a quick look in the car itself but the manual doesn't mention anything either.

Seems obvious, but look where the smoke came from for burnt bits?

It sounds like the switch has broken to me. If there was anything wrong with the motor the wipers wouldn't work at all. I bet a pound to a penny it's the switch.

I think Dan might have replaced the switch too but it's still not working properly. Although the replacement switch was off an Audi down the breakers yard so it may well have had the same problem anyway!

Time to ring round a few motor factors for a new one I think!

Thanks!

Ithangyew, Agent006, will give them a shout. GSF were always pretty handy when we needed parts for the old "donkey" Saab (family heirloom, busted heater - pc fan on dashboard angled onto windscreen with biro lid and stuck down with blu-tack...British engineering at it's best!).
