Rega RP1 to Naim
Discussion
Hello, could I have some advice.
I have cobbled together a smallish budget (£300) to buy a turntable.
I was thinking about a Rega rp1 as it looks like it's pretty decent and is made in the UK.
Question is, how do I set this up with my Naim 112/150 pre/power amp? I find the whole phone stage moving magnet/ coil baffling!
Many thanks in advance.

Do you have a phono (turntable) input on your amp ? If not you will need a phono stage. MM Moving magnet means the magnet is on the cantilever and moves in the coils so produces a healthy output ~20mV. MC Moving coil , means the coils are on the cantilever and being much lighter you should get a "better" more acurate sound. Bad news is that they are usually just 0.3-0.5mV output so need a serious phono stage to amplify them up enough for the nominal 1V of a standard line input. At £300 for turntable/arm/cartridge you will only get a MM, MCs are also usually much more expensive.
Not sure of that Naim; must pre-date a 42/110. Should have an input selector on the front for 'phono', no?
Only by taking the lid off will you find out whether it's for a MM or MC cartridge...
Given you budget, you'll end up with a MM cartridge. If your pre has MC gain, then I would buy a simple standalone phono stage (amp for the cartridge) and plug it all into the tuner or tape input. Keep volume low until you're sure it's working ok.....
