I've been quoted £135 for a power steering pump, for a MK1 Focus.

Why so much?

Because the power steering, and air con pumps, are one unit, so you have to replace the lot.

The worst part is, the aircon has so many leaks, it will never work again, but it will have a nice new pump fitted to the system.

If the car was a non aircon version, the pump would be under £50

Why not make them separate units?

Packaging constraints in the engine bay. Access limitations. Budgetary constraints. Weight saving. I could go on.
Unfortunately repair costs for the 5th owner when the car is 10 years old is pretty low down the list of priorities. Sorry frown

Can you not get one off a breaker?

The wing mounted intercoolers on S14/a 200SXs are very prone to cracking. If you want a new one from Nissan, it will cost you just under 2k, as you basically have to buy the entire inlet tract...!

Just like the tandem PAS/suspension pumps on the cursed R230 SL Mercs. A snip at £840. Plus VAT. Plus fitting. Plus 16(?) litres of fluid at about £15 a litre. Bunch of arse!

Could you not just fit a non aircon pump if the aircon won't work anyway?

Or breakers on ebay, as above.

I'm thinking about it, but it will still cost £50, with no guarantee of how long it will last.

The car is otherwise perfect, so it would be worth paying the full price.

It's just annoying that I am effectively paying for 2 parts, when we only need one.

Are you absolute sure this is correct, OP? I'm pretty sure that the two pumps are completely seperate units. I have experience of the 1.6, 1.8, an 2.0 petrol Mk1 Focus engines and ancillaries and haven't come across this, nor in fact on any other car I've worked on.

If it is correct, £150 for both a new AC an PAS pump sounds really cheap!

<sceptical face> Assuming it's an engine that came in non-aircon spec as well, I'd be surprised if it was much more than a different bracket/belt. Unless there's some tensioner issue.

Can only go one what I was told by the garages I have been to, I will happily be corrected.

Reading the points made above, could they be separate units, but different mounting points?

Still doesn't explain the price difference.

Time to go to a third garage possibly?

The front propshaft flex disc failed on my MB while on holiday so the garage recommended front and rear were replaced. (an easy enough job had I been at home) so both replaced but the rear one on inspection looked perfect. banghead

Yes, I think so. A quick google would suggest that they are separate units.

Check ebay, I don't see any pas pumps with aircon pumps on them, or vice versa.

Looking on Google, I can see the non aircon, and the aircon equipped pumps are different, but not being mechanically inclined, I have no idea what I am looking at.

That doesn't sound right. They have different working fluids and will be used in different circumstances.

You may have found that one damaged the other due to loading on the FEAD.
