When did MOT records start going online? As I have a car that I showing last taxes in 2012, but there are no MOT records available so was wondering why they aren't showing as it seems silly taxing a car without an MOT

They've been computerised for years and years, certainly earlier than 2012

Quick google suggests it started about 2005, which "feels" about right, and took a couple of years to roll out fully. You wouldn't have been able to tax it in '11/12 without a ticket, and it'd certainly have been computerised.

Got to be 5 or 6 years? I think my current MOT has the last 5 or 6 recorded miles printed on it from previous MOTs.

"Since April 2005 the MOT test has been computerised – a process which Government expect to complete by the end of March 2006. This means that all MOT paperwork will become computerised."

Longer than that then....according to the MOT website

I think the MOT information has only been more easily accessible in the last couple of years. You could find out about the date before then, but it involved some convoluted process of having the V5, the MOT cert, the V5 ref number, it being Tuesday and sunny

Now you can tap in a car reg to the Gov.uk site and it'll tell you straight away the expiry dates of both tax and MOT.

It seems to have taken a while to get the info that's held out into a platform that the general public can read, but I'm glad they've got it sorted

This is a bit of a basket case of a classic mini that I purchased about a month ago. Might look at the mot website with the v5 ref.

It's not old enough to be MOT exempt is it?

Even if it was, pre-60 MOT exemption only came in from Nov '12.

But if the last SORN expired in July '12 - before SORN became "sticky", or because of a change of keeper - that'd show you that result.
