Am I the Odd One Out?
Discussion
I was stood still in traffic on Tuesday and got hit quite hard from behind by a guy not paying attention. Fair enough, s
t happens.
All sorted quite amicably with him and my insurance.
I told folk at work about it the next day, and the first thing most of them asked, was, had I put in a claim yet for whiplash?
Admittedly there is a small ache either side of the top of my back which is subsiding. I can't be arsed as I have no real financial loss from this.
Am I the odd one out for not claiming?

In this day and age, probably. Everyone who claims make everyone elses premiums go up, and the people who have genuinely bad whiplash are probably discriminated against because so many people can claim on it as it's hard to prove.
On the plus side, if you change your mind, you'll be having phone calls for the next few years asking did you have an accident on x and they can help you claim the compensation you deserve.

No, thankfully.
I was in the car with my old man a few months back, coming back from a football match in Newcastle (200 miles away). We were crossing a bridge and slowing down due to traffic, when a woman went straight into the back of the car. Luckily my dad was braking, so we didn't hit the car in front as well.
All sorted by the side of the road. We both had sore necks a few hours later, but it was minor and not worth bothering about.
I suggest reminding the people at your work that next time they complain about their high insurance costs, they really should look into why it is so expensive...

You say you have no real financial loss but have you checked how much your insurance is going to go up just simply by having an accident on your record even when it was a non fault.
This - use the whiplash claim which will probably be around £1500 to pay the extra insurance loss and if any left over donate it to your favourite charityNo, my better half was crashed into in July 2012 writing off the car and it was a nasty bump. Everyone, including the insurance company fully expected her to be claiming as a matter of course. However, luckily she did not have a mark on her and genuinely felt no ill effects so therefore did not jump on the band wagon. It would have been an easy £1500-£2000 but she couldn't justify lying to claim any cash. I agreed, especially as my dad was on the receiving end of a spurious claim in the past which thankfully was never paid out.
I suffered some mild ache to my gentlemans area when a drier did a U-turn on me.
I didint bother to claim for it, because the discomfort went away after a few days.
Be careful about using comparison sites for insurance quotes, if you put in you had an accident you get comapnies ringing you trying to get you to claim. I did this, and every phone call I got I loudly informed them I had bruised my left testicle; the office would laugh, the man or woman on the phone would laugh and then I got upset with them saying it was quite uncomfortable and i dont like people taking humor in my misfortune. then I hang up. And we all laugh again.

I was positively hounded to make a claim from my own insurance company last year. Stood in stationary traffic on a steepish hill heading up. The car in front stalled and tried to pull away quickly, missed first gear and hit reverse. It was a mistake, fair and simple. I ended up with a cracked bumper which was replaced. But the number of call I got about seeing a doctor and putting a claim in for personal injusry was shocking.....told them that if I need to see a doctor after receiving a cracked bumper they were very much mistaken..or words to that effect...
Its a matter of course its seems, I still get calls saying 'we understand you were in an accident'. No my neighbour reversed into my door denting it badly enough for a replacement. At no point was I anywhere near either vehicle when this was happening, now please take me off your database and stop ringing me!
My wife recently slipped over on a wet floor in a coffee shop in London. There were no warning signs, and she slipped and damaged one of her shoes. She sent an email to the head office, and they were terrified of her making a claim against them for personal injury. She made it clear that all she wanted was the replacement cost of her shoes, nothing further, as she only had a couple of bruises. They seemed very surprised, but happily reimbursed for the shoes, and everyone was happy.
No. I was rear-ended in my Saab by a bloke who was not hanging about - it rendered his mondeo undrivable. I'd actually been suffering with an agonising painful neck in the weeks leading up to the crash, but despite that and the terror I had for a few months whenever I was stationary in traffic, I didn't claim for anything except repairs.
In the end it just jacks up the costs for everyone - and I had no moral right to claim.

I had a fairly minor crash in July 2012, an Audi A6 did a U-turn into the side of my Mondeo. All settled by his insurance, a fair old bump but no actual harm done to me.
My insurer asked me once if I'd suffered injury but that was it. No calls from 'ambulance chasers' or suchlike. I don't doubt I could have claimed quite easily (and a couple of grand would have been very nice) but I never considered it an option.
Chatting to a chap at work, he couldn't believe it. Apparently, he had had a few shunts in the last few years, each time claiming a couple of grand for whiplash, despite being perfectly fine.

I'd hope you're in a majority, but I have a rather depressing feeling that you aren't. Those who make personal injury claims for injuries the haven't got are amongst the more disgusting scum in our society, IMO.
It's one of my fonder hopes that one day they'll find a way of proving whether a person has ever had whiplash and lock up every person who's ever claim fraudulently.

Six months ago I was in the other guy's shoes. All sorted similarly amicably. My colleagues were astounded that I had no intention of claiming for whiplash (and haven't done so).
However, as other posters haven't mentioned, don't worry, you will be harassed about it by telephone for months

Sorry, long story.
I was shunted from behind in June, a VW Bora hit me after an Astra hit them. I was waiting at a roundabout in torrential rain. After the bump we all pulled over session I asked for insurance details. There were five occupants in the VW, only two spoke broken English but understood the law and were fine and in the Vauxhall, the person who caused the accident, was an Italian woman and her old mother.
The woman immediately started shouting at me at why I wanting her insurance details, she was rubbing my cars bumper in an energetic, frantic wiping motion shrieking ‘look, look no damage, you just want to claim’. I kept calm and repeatedly asked for her insurance details. Even after explaining some facts to her, i.e. no one is hurt, it’s a legal obligation and I need to get home to my wife as she really needs these nappies I bought for our three day old son! I left out the part where it was her fking fault!
So up pops her mother pointing at me and repeating ‘you want to claim’. I told her mother to calm down and said that I’d had nothing to do with her. Then came the abuse, the woman driver lost it ‘fking this and that and said fking typical Englishman’, I remained calm and asked why she was swearing and being racist (first time for me to be a victim of positive racism), all of this didn’t bother me but I’d had enough, I rang 101. I spoke to the lady on the phone and she asked to speak to the woman driver. Upon finding that I called 101 three of the occupants of the VW disappeared and the woman gave me her details. It took weeks for her to admit liability to the insurance company but I got the car fixed.
But here’s the crux, they were right I did claim off her insurance not for whip lash but for an injury to my wrist. I didn't know I was going to make a personal injury claim but after a few hours I knew I was hurt. Is this a bad thing for me to do, of course not. Before the accident I was going to the shop for nappies and I came home not being able to pick up my three year old! This woman ran into me and aftarwards thinking about the incident and on reflection I got angry, she made me feel bad at her inability to read the road, I was in a heightened emotional state anyway to my baby’s birth and all I wanted to do was to be at home and she prevented me from doing that AND she injured me.
I course I should claim and in future I hope it makes her more careful and less of a twit. Four months on and my wrist still hurts.
