Why is it that driving at 100 or 125 or 150mph or ... regarded as so wicked when I can go to Germany and drive at 170mph pefectly happily?
Why can I drive in Germany at such speeds with no problem at all, yet here in England, when caught at such speeds you are regarded as one of the most terrible people that ever walked the earth? I thought we were all part of Europe. Surely if they are allowed to do it over there, we should be allowed to do it over here.
I live an extremely busy life and own a business in three countries. I have no time or waste 'trundling along an open road. I have a car that is built for safety and for speed and 100mph+ is second nature.
I believe we could remove the speed limits on large amounts of motorways! Yes, I can hear some of you do-gooders shouting and screaming already. I don't mean you do it everywhere and/or where it is busy, but why not where there are clear stretches of road and/or at night. The Germans haven't been right at everything but this is certainly one thing they have done to help their country.
I'm sorry, people that drive slowly are often far more of a menace on the roads. They don't concentrate, they don't look in their mirrors, wander all over the road and hog either the middle or third lane without a care in the world. They pull out to overtake with barely a wink at their rear view mirror. they pull out of side turnings without a single thought of joining the existing flow of the traffic, but chug off down the road causing everyone else to brake. These mostly seem to be the people with a chip on their shoulder and slam their brakes on or widely gesticulate, spending most of their time glaring into the rear view mirror rather than concentrating on their own eractic movements! Frankly, they cause all sorts of problems for just about every other road user.
Long live the autobahns, long live the people that enjoy using them and ban the wasters that cause 95% of the accident by driving at 50mph without due care and attention as mentioned above!!
I will enjoy the response, good, bad and indifferent!!

Because in Germany, other drivers are expecting the sort of closing speeds it generates. In the UK, they aren't.

Also consider the fact that almost everyone would agree that German drivers are, on average, significantly more competent than British ones, yet Germany has markedly more fatal road traffic accidents by just about every metric than the UK.

Parts of the Northern Territories in Australia are unrestricted as well. Although, best of luck if you want to keep the pedal buried on these roads!!!

Having driven a fair amount on the unrestricted parts of the autobahn, most traffic cruises at about 85 / 90. Not that much quicker than a well flowing motorway here tbh.

Over much of the day, on much of the uk motorway network, 70 mph can only be dreamed of. Speeds of over 100mh you can pretty much forget.

Somewhat chicken and egg don't you think? There would need to be some rules about where and when higher speeds were acceptable, however it should not be impossible to implement.

I haven't done a lot of driving in Germany so I may have failed to notice how much better they are, all the cars not moving right to get out of the way on the motorway were probably non-Germans that happened to be on holiday too. wink

I did notice a higher number of ordinary cars being driven with enthusiasm though.

Trouble comes when the bell end in lane two wants to overtake the two lorries that have been overtaking each other for the past mile and a half and doesn't assess the fact you are closing on him at 90+mph and pulls into lane three giving you no where to go.

If I had the choice of doing 100mph + in a modern sports car or the 80mph I did downhill in my first car a Triumph herald 12/50 then its a no brainer. I do see reports on the news quoting drivers over 100mph being akin to the very worst doings of a former white haired DJ.Speed isn't the killer bad driving is

Sorry, but if you are carrying a high differential speed past something so obviously a hazard then there is another bell end in the picture.

Do you really rely on other drivers not making a mistake to avoid accidents? At the moment you appear to be just the sort of driver that reinforces the need for speed limits.

Feel free to explain how I have misread your post.
