help required - spyware programmes
Discussion
I have picked up a couple of programmes that I want to delete........... I am running Norton anti virus but it wont get rid of them and I cant manually delete them either. They advertise spyware and when you click close they then want you to connect so obviously diallers. I am on B/band so can't get caught. Zonelab spyware on the net found the programmes but wants you to pay for the software to delet them.... any help appreciated

Download Ad-Aware personal edition from www.lavasoft.com
Make sure to keep it updated with the latest definitions, and run it at least once a week (or whenever you discover a problem).
Could also do a search on www.download.com for other (free) Spyware software.
You can also download a good (free) firewall from www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/comparison.jsp?lid=ho_za
Finally, stop using Internet Explorer and download Firefox (www.getfirefox.com). Far fewer security holes, no popup ads and tabbed browsing.

Have also heard good things about HijackThis! but havnt tried it yet.
HijackThis! is excellent if you know what you're doing, it can kill your computer if you don't!
It doesn't do things automatically - it puts up a list of potentailly dodgy registry entries and asks you what ones to delete. However, some are perfectly safe for your computer and/or are essential for it to run. Plenty of forums on the 'net (I imagine this one too) will tell you what to delete if you paste up the log it produces.
I think I just had an autodialler too - immediately after Windows loaded the Dial Up connection window would appear. I'd click Cancel and it would say 'connecting...'. I'd Cancel again and it would go.
Every so often it would pop up again.
IMO Norton's no good for this kind of thing (fine for viruses but not spyware) - however SpyBot found it and killed it.
