Quick question for the BIB

Regarding the emergency telephones on motorways (M6 Lancashire, in particular) I know that should you happen to use one of these, it's answered by a civilian staff, but is there a "duty Police Officer" in charge of the "Control room" and if so, what would be his rank?

It's important that I have the correct information, not just a guess.

Marvellous post that. I was one for two and half years at M2XN. Chief Constable of the Force from 5pm to 9am.

Just as a point of interest can any Met confirm that there is still the post of Back Hall Inspector. Any query regarding the Met, contact him and you got an answer.

In our Control Room its a Pc.......for the last few months its been me!

Just for info, at present, we run with a Civvie and a Pc.

Now its the Chief Insp at CCCIR (NSY).

Most control rooms have a mixture of Police Officers and Civilian staff.

There will be generally more civilians than Police Officers. Some of those civilians will be retired Police Officers.

As stated there will be an Inspector in charge and usually a Sergeant as his Right hand man.

Police Officers do staff the phones occasionally and are employed as dispatchers and control terminal operators.

In Lancashire, the area control room that covers the motorway doubles as a divisional control room - there are dedicated radio despatchers for the motorway, as for the other sectors.

The operators are a mix of (mostly) civilians and Police.

The person in overall command is an Inspector, known as the "Force Incident Manager" or "FIM". He or she is responsible, in the first instance, for any major incidents in the County, until the appropriate person can be contacted. The FIM controls ALL pursuits, once the divisional control room has passed the incident log to their control room.
