Took delivery of a new car. Oil is overfilled. Is this too much? Or acceptable?

I wouldn't say that's an issue - what car is it?

When does the handbook say you should measure the oil? Hot/cold etc

Thanks It's a Fiesta ST. Handbooks suggests from cold and after 3000 miles consumption should normalise.

The Max and Min marks are there for a reason. Obviously overfilling is unlikely to be as bad as underfilling, but it demonstrates incompetence on someone's part.

That's barely "overfilled."

Surely if you hold the oily end upwards it will run down making it look appear further up(down) the dipstick?

I really don't know what to say, especially about somebody above talking about incompetence. 5mm above the max notch is not a problem, so you can sleep well tonight.

Would the manufacturer put a tad more in to start with because they know it'll burn it off quicker?

Wouldn't surprise me if this were so - add a little to compensate for increased consumption in the first couple of thousand miles.

Thats the first thing I thought!

Anyway, could the OP please return and let us know how he measured this - cold/hot/level surface/just been run/waiting a few minutes??

I wouldn't be concerned if that is the level when measured properly, its not enough over to do any damage.

What car is it OP?

I've not long had a new fiesta, all of the fluids are slightly over the max, no problems in 2k miles! I wouldn't worry OP,

Screenshot was just to reduce the file size quickly.

I wondered if it was due to being a new car and that they put a tad more oil in.

Once it was delivered I checked the oil and tyre pressures etc.

It was measured a few times, cold, and after a run when it had time to cool down. All taken on level ground. It's held horizontal just for the photo.

I'd rather be safe than sorry, so thanks for the replies. I'll continue to monitor it. Old habits die hard and I always check oil and pressures etc.

I'll sleep well tonight as advised. smile

It seems very popular these days, no idea why people do it.
