Its been sent off to the DVLA for a plate change.

I cant think of anything legally wrong, even if you might have to do some explaining to Plod if picked up. I'd have the new keeper supplement, and then have to backdate the logbook when it turned up on new plates, to send back to DVLA for reg keeper change.

I think the standard questions you should ask yourself are;

Where is the car being purchased from? Trade or Private?
Trustworthy?

I generally find where there is doubt, walk out.

Receipt proves ownership? Unfortunately 'fecking ages' isnt an option for me. Im supposed to have one for work and its been a while already sans car.

I recently took an Impreza as a part-ex against a car I was selling. I had no intention of keeping the Impreza and listed it for sale immediately, selling it within two weeks and before I had received the V5. As you say, I had a receipt for the car and I also took pictures of the previous owner's V5 before he sent it off. The chap who bought the Impreza from me did so before the V5 arrived and just asked that we meet to complete the details on the V5 once I had received it. The V5 arrived about a week later, we filled out his details and backdated it.
