Clicky injectors...Usual?
Discussion
I think I asked this once before but lost the thread somewhere.
With the bonnet up,if you flick the throttle, can you hear your injectors clicking? A rapid click which increases with throttle.
At least I am pretty sure its the injectors, the noise comes from the area of the fuel regulator and bar.
Gave it a dose of redex a while ago but no change and can't remember if it always did this but I never paid it much attention.
Engine runs and picks up fine.
We are talking S1.5, 2.9 here incidentally.
Cheers all

Hi Tim,
I'm reliably informed that this is a sign of a failing injector, one of mine does exactly the same thing!
The ticking goes if you increase the revs and I also noticed at the revs range where the ticking occurs I have a flat spot on acceleration which is consistent with duff injector/s.
Refurb is approx £20 to £25 each. Lucas can do them with their ASNU service.

try this
get a wood bar (a foot of broom handle will do) and hold it in one hand cupped over your ear.
If you touch the other end against the injectors and inlet manifold you should be able to isolate the noise down pretty much. You can also try the rocker covers (which would show up any clicking rockers etc) - you can listen to alternator bearings, water pumps etc with the same technique - but be careful. This should help to diagnose the problem.
You can also use a 12" socket extension bar but remember that's not insulated from electric shock - a stray volt in the earhole leaves your brain numb for hours...
Having said all that, it does sound like your injectors are tired... I had one (on a V6 Granada) that went like that for months and then mysteriously was all right again...

tvrgit,
I use the spout from my petrol can as an ear trumpet to define where noises are coming from, it does the job very well.
I didn't initially use this and thought my fuel pressure regulator was making the ticking noise so I replaced that with a power boost valve and that made the car much smoother on acceleration anyway so I thought it had solved the problem but then realised the ticking was still present so I used the petrol spout to isolate other engine noises.

At the risk of looking like a deranged elephant I think the petrol can pipe sounds a good idea, will give it a try..probably inside the garage when my daughters out!
Had tappets adjusted only a week or so ago and perhaps that has made this noise more noticable.
Sounds like I will have to get them checked over.
Kentish, seeing how you have done some homework already and you are such a resourceful chap...
You don't happen to know the local Lucas place do you?
As its Christmas!

Sure you can't do the grasshopper on the 28th?
If you call Hastings branch, ask for Ian in the fuel injection workshop. He knows his stuff!
Sadly, I can't make the Grasshopper as I've got the alarm company coming to complete the CCTV installation around the house and I'll also have the wrinklies for Christmas!
