Last year I had an accident that resulted in both driver and passenger airbags deploying. Repair work was carried out under my insurance by the garage nominated by my insurer. Repairs included both new airbags and a new dash.

Since the repair the airbag warning light has come on. Intermittently at first, and now a solid fault. The car has gone back to the garage who have taken it to the local OPC (Cambridge) They have said there is no fault with the airbag, and that any further work would be chargeable, and the repairing garage wants me to underwrite their liability to any further costs.

My position is simple that before the accident there was no fault, and subsequent to their repairs there is. Is anyone able to offer a probable cause to this warning light activation, and also advise my rights as to any cost liability?

Thanks

Firstly, it's actually an SRS light (Secondary Restraint System, of which the airbags form part), used to indicate faults with any part of the system.

The fault you have could be unrelated to the work - the most common cause of the SRS light coming on is actually due to the connection or wiring to the driver's seatbelt pretensioner (as that's the seat that's moved backwards and forwarded more often, fatiguing the cable & connector). The second most common cause is the passenger seat occupancy sensor failing (it's a big pad within the seat base and again, fatigues over time). Neither are horrifically expensive to fix, but there is a bit of labour involved stripping the seat down to swap the occupancy sensor.

You need to know specifically what's causing your SRS light to illuminate to be able to eliminate/pinpoint what's up.

Hi If the airbag light has come on then there should be a fault code stored in the system.
