Provisional Licence - Motortrade Policy
Discussion
After failing my driving test and reciecving a car I now have the issue of insuring myself onto the car for the time being until my next driving test.
As the car is only insured on my dads motortrade policy the car is not neccessarly "insured".
Is there any company that any one knows of that allows someone to be insured onto the car, even if the car is only on the database as a motortrade car?

What I was looking for was short term learner driver cover, which is not available to a person owning their own car. It is designed for learners to use other peoples cars (family members, friends) already insured by them, where the learner driver is granted short term cover (no more than six months) of their own.
As both my parents are covered on a motor trade policy, their personal vehicles are not subject to a private policy, which is the usual expected norm. I am told by two insurance companies so far (Chaucer Direct and Tesco Bank - who can't cover because of the MT policy) there might be some insurance companies who will accept my parents being on MT cover, and permit me short term learner driver insurance accordingly.
What I'm asking is if anyone here knows of such a company. My dad said this was the forum to come to as there would be some motor traders here who would have come up against this problem with their own kids and insurance cover.
My parents are fully insured. It was my dad's suggestion to ask here for help and sound advice. I'm sorry for not explaining my predicament in enough detail. It may be that I will take out full cover as it seems the better option, but this is difficult as some brokers and some companies won't allow learner cover to continue to full license cover, and some won't give cover on a Beetle 1600. The problem is, telesales don't tell you this until they've taken you through what's usually a twenty minute process. So if anyone knows a broker or insurance company offering good cover for a competitive price for a 21 year old learner taking her second test in 5 weeks, please share here thanks.

I'd start with some of the less mainstream, specialist brokers - A-Plan, Hagerty, RH Classic, Adrian Flux, Lancaster etc. As I think you've gathered, you're going to need to find someone who'll go the extra mile to find an answer. In other words, a proper broker. You'll need to do a fair bit of ringing around, and might not get lucky, but if you're as clear and intelligible on the phone as you are in writing then you at least you stand a good chance of someone doing a bit of legwork for you.

Provisional Marmalade http://www.wearemarmalade.co.uk/learner-driver-ins...I think ikube also have a learner driver product.
Thank you Gruber. I've not tried any of those except for Flux, who so far have offered the most competitive price for a full license policy. They won't offer the same price or cover starting from a provisional license though. I will continue, taking your other recommendations first.
Marmalade was offered by Chauser Direct though would not cover on a vehicle subject to trade policy. The telesales explained there might be other brokers / companies who would offer Marmalade though he didn't know any personally. I'm not confident Marmalade will cover through an other if CD won't / can't. Hence my asking here.

The obvious solution is for your dad to take out a private car policy, then the provisional marmalade policy. xRIEx said:

So dad insures himself for the Beetle on a private policy, which means it's also registered to dad. Then I take out the short term provisional license policy.Yes that's really obvious. Thank you. Except I did state earlier I, not dad, was hoping to find competitively priced cover.

Then take out a policy in your name with your dad as a named driver - there are a few companies who will insure a provisional driver but it's not going to be cheap. Yes that's really obvious. Thank you. Except I did state earlier I, not dad, was hoping to find competitively priced cover.
Alternatively do the above, pass your test then transfer the car to your name.
Or just carry on putting fake barriers in your own way so you get nothing done and can pretend you have a reason to be angry at 'the system'. You asked for solutions and you got some - there often isn't the perfect solution that is to your liking, especially where insurance is concerned.

Does this mean you're not the registered keeper and the insurance industry thinks the vehicle is being held temporarily (for the purposes of resale?)? If so, not entirely surprising that it's proving tricky.<snip>

Yes I can do this for either of my parents, but this is subject to a full license holder with the places I have tried thus far, which is why I asked if anyone had knowledge of companies that would do this for a provisional license holder now, who then becomes a full license holder during the course of cover, where the cover is allowed to run its duration. I've not found one so far. xRIEx said:

Excuse me?I'm not angry. What are you talking about!
I'm trying to find short term cover for my Beetle as a provisional license holder. Difficult because my parents have MT cover so don't have a car insured on a private policy, which would permit me access to a STP (on my Beetle) if they had.
I asked if anyone knows a company which will allow same, except with my parents on MT cover (not having private cover), as CD telesales said there might be a company who would (with Marmalade). Just not them. Is this clear enough for you?

Yes I did. Then I received your rude reply and obnoxious attitude for my doing so. I came here for motoring related help. Not abuse. I'm not looking for a perfect solution. I'm seeking insurance cover which is absolutely legal beyond question is all. What isn't straightforward in doing so is the anomaly presented by my being a provisional license holder and both parents on MT cover without private vehicle policies. These are not as you put it "fake barriers"
My dad did warn there are some dick heads (his words) who frequent this forum who use it to blow their own trumpets. I didn't expect I'd find one so soon. I'll let dad know he was right thanks.

Thank you for your concern. I've asked dad for the purpose of letting anyone know here who is genuinely wanting to be helpful, I nor my parents are breaking any laws, or looking to do so.The Beetle is still with dad at business premises. He bought it. He owns it, and wants to present it to me ASAP (legally). It is held 'in trade' with DVLA. It is currently on MID as a personal vehicle and not as a vehicle for sale. Dad will not allow me to drive it, or register it in my name, until I have appropriate insurance cover.
Goodness me. This is an angry place for a young woman to be seeking help from. Are you always this welcoming at Piston Heads?

Abundantly. Problem is no private car policy; solution is incept private car policy. Is that clear enough?I'm aware of Marmalade, the insurance network I previously worked for had them as a partner insurer so I could probably find a couple of hundred brokers who sell Provisional Marmalade (I could also wax lyrical about Intelligent Marmalade and Young Marmalade if you want).

- Parent takes out private car policy on individual vehicle- Learner driver 'add on' policy purchased (if going the Provisional Marmalade route)
- Job done

They are fake barriers if you have to have your scenario catered for rather than accommodating the products and services available to you; if cover ends at the moment you pass your test, you buy a new policy - end of.

Maybe it doesn't exist; a possible workaround (or two) are listed above. If you want your exact scenario to occur and dismiss the workarounds offered, that's a fake barrier. If you find a product that caters for your exact wishes, fantastic.

Fake barrier - what you hope for isn't always what you get, deal with the problem in front of you.Edited by xRIEx on Tuesday 7th October 11:41

I've just spoken to Marmalade and have been advised that if the vehicle appears on the MID as insured (even if under a MT policy, as some MT policies allow (or require) policyholder-owned vehicles to be declared) then they can cover it.ISP123 said:

Those two statements are mutually exclusive, if the trader is following the MID process and DVLA processes correctly.ISP123 said:

99% of young people asking questions like this relating to trade insurance are doing so because they are doing something wrong/illegal - seems you are in the 1% and I congratulate you on that - just follow the advice given by others re: getting a personal policy.I seem to remember Collingwood offer an annual insurance product that would cover you in this situation (car owned by learner driver) as opposed to their daily/weekly/monthly product (car owned and insured by fully licensed parent/etc)

Seriously, just picking up on a couple of comments & points. I take it the car will be given to you, if not already. Once in your name you can just insure it, Dad takes it off of the MID like any other dealer would when a car is sold.
It's not difficult to insure a car as a learner but be aware, some insurers will charge a higher premium once you've passed your test (as you will driving un-supervised), will be worth asking this question if you arrange cover as a learner.
If the car is an old Beetle (aircooled/rear engine) then the age of the car may be out of some insurers remit, particularly insurers specialising in young drivers.
Are you wanting to learn to drive in this car or are you taking lessons in a driving school car? Having your own policy as a learner will let others sit in with you (just don't go asking on here!).
As a final point albeit a random one. If you are employed by your parents business, depending on insurer, it may be possible for you to be added as a driver under their policy but there will be a cc limit applicable, probably 1400cc.

Possibly for me, I've worked in insurance for 17 years and appreciate when someone doesn't slag it down or treat it like an annoying hindrance. Wait no, that can't possibly be the reason.
