Gear oil drain

How do I drain the gear oil?
There is a drain plug (well looks like one) on the end of the box but seems to be too high up.
I seem to have a leak from the joint of the rear cone to main box. Problem is I don't know how much I have lost.
Can any of the plug/vents be used to establish the correct level?

Steve,

There should be a drain in the bottom of the gearbox. It could be hiding under the crossmember! Could be a recessed allen head and hard to see.

The only way to determine the correct level of oil is to drain it and refill with 3.5 liters. If you have to replace a gasket/seal you would have to drain it anyway...

If its there I can't see or feel it.

Which gearbox/year do you have?

G50/20 six speed. 1994 I think but not sure.

I don't have a parts breakdown on that one. I will call a buddy of mine tomorrow who owns a Porsche shop and see what I can find.

If there is not a drain plug that will empty the gearbox completely, there will be no way to know how much is in there. If it has to be pulled to replace the gasket, at least you can put the right amount in and maybe make a dipstick of some kind to measure with the next time?

I have the same gearbox, the drain plug is really hard to find. Standing behind the car the plug is on the right side of the hydraulic cylinder just behind the chassis rail. It's hard to access and you can't see it, but you should feel it. It's really there.

Well done sir your a star. Now I've found it I can't work out how I failed to find it before.

I bet I now get 3.499999L out of it and wonder why I bothered. Still has to be done just in case.
