So, there's someone selling a watch privately, we're on the verge of agreeing the price. The problem he it's about 500 miles away. Seller wants me to pay via PayPal, I'm nervous there's no garauntee he will send the watch. Is there a solution?

It depends on the value, £50 & it's worth the risk, £5k, no way.

If it's a decent watch, then why not travel?

If it's from the classifieds on a watch form, then ask for references from other members.

There is a multitude of scams around at the moment, so be wary.

I wouldn't have an issue paying with PayPal. Providing he creates an invoice for you and you pay it as an invoice through PayPal and not as a gift then you will be covered by buyer protection.

He absolutely has to send the item as if you open a dispute and he cannot provide evidence it has been delivered to your address then you will win and reclaim your money in full.

Use the Goods/Service option – Paypal isn't just for eBay purchases or online retail, but factor in £28 will be taken as fees.
The alternative is to both register and use https://www.transpact.com – which is a very cost effective escrow service.
If he's UK based, then even exchange phone numbers and have a chat – you'll get a gut instinct whether he's the real deal or to be avoided.
The phone call may allow him to feel comfortable in sending you the watch whilst he waits on the payment to be released within the timeframe you both agree on – typically 24 hours.

I'm assuming he'll get hit with the PayPal fee?

Paypal is far riskier for the seller than the buyer.

If you agree a price, make sure it's done with full knowledge you'll be using the Goods/Service option, so either pay the fee on top (add 3.5%) or negotiate splitting the difference.
So if £700 posted – then £724.50 or £712.25.
Th escrow option I linked to will cost all of £6 or 7, either paid in full by one party or split evenly between both.
