Formation flying, Sunday afternoon, North Yorkshire...
Discussion
... a twin-engined jet (looked like an airliner) being escorted by 4 fighters (couldn't tell what, my plane-spotting days went out when I stopped building Airfix kits 35 years ago).
Flying in a V-formation, the left outer fighter was further out and further back than the others.
Seemed to do at least three laps of a 20-minute circuit at quite high altitude; anyone any idea what was happening?

4x F/A18s plus 1x KC10 Extender on their way back to the USA.
So why the three aerial laps of the county?
The USA is west from here, they were flying a clockwise circuit so kept coming IN from the west and turning south! We did wonder at first if it was a hijack and the fighters were there to shoot it down if the situation developed

They transited the Wash Area at around 2.30/3.00pm, I watched them fly over. They were followed later by a single KC135 Stratotanker. I understand that they were en-route back to California via Keflavik having spent some time on detachment here.
What they were circumnavigating the NE I am not aware.
Sightseeing maybe? (You never can tell with Spams!)
Seriously though, they were probably carrying out refuelling practice.
