Hey All

I've been driving an E46 M3 for the last 5 years but fancy a change. Although the M3 has been a great car, one of the problems I find is that it doesn't really come alive until your doing over 4k revs and 80+ and my other main gripe is that it doesn't really have a lot of steering feel / feedback like a Boxster or Elise.

Is there something second hand under £8k that can remedy these?

Elise? Mk1's can be had for that kind of money.

How about a supercharged Mk.1/Mk.2 MX5? Great steering, chassis etc, just needs a bit more poke than standard and it'd be perfect!

yep, get something old skool!

Take my Hillman Imp as an example

You don't need to be going fast in it to think you are driving at high speeds! Anything above 60 and you think you are going to hit the sound barrier!

You feel everything and the driving experience is far more rewarding than a fast modern car (my other cars include 996GT3, 964 and RS2) but the Imp just puts a bloody huge smile on your face every time you hit the loud pedal!!

Has to be said again, Elise or SC MX5. I miss my old MX5 so much I'm going to get one "for the other half", so I can drive it.

Mk1 MX5, no need for a super charger or you're going to have similar speeding issues as your M3. I had one as a daily for nearly three years and it was heaps of fun for little outlay.

As mentioned already, Imp, Mini, TVR (V6 or V8). Something so basic but sorted that you can feel and hear exactly what is going on, your senses attacked by induction, compression, power, exhaust, transmission/diff whine, feedback through unassisted rack, the smell of petrol and the sensual connection between your arse and every bloody imperfection in the road!

A VX220. Get one with a load exhaust and it feels a lot faster than it is. Had one for 3 1/2 years, drive slow by other VX driver standards going by a meet I went too, but enjoy every single drive.

MX5? If not how about a Miata? Not sure what else, maybe a Eunos? Just some ideas...

I think instead of the usual SC/Turbo route, the NASP upgrades available now are looking quite tempting for a bit more poke without going too mad. £1500 sees your 1.8 Mk1 taken from 128bhp to about 165bhp at Blink Motorsport with an upgraded head, cams and ECU. Some much needed power but without removing that character of a cheap, light roadster and without making it too fast.

I was also thinking something classic but its hard to find something good for £8k. I would have thought large displacement engines such as those in the Chimera will also struggle to get exciting until well into higher speeds.

Based on the displacement was thinking may be a Smart roadster but they don't seem to get great reviews from what I've seen so far. Are there any other 1200cc or less fun cars other than classic mini's?

Would really love a S2 Elise but unfortunately they are well out of budget and I cant get past the beach buggy looks of the S1's.

E30 325i. Steering is slower, but provides a lot more feedback
