Another notice period question
Discussion
I work for a company for the last 18 months. As of yet I have not had or signed a contract. I get paid monthly and I have always been on the understanding that if you get paid monthly you or the employer would have to give a months notice and if you were paid weekly notice would be on a weekly basis.
But others who also get paid monthly state the either party only have to give a weeks notice... Is this correct if your paid monthly?
The reason I ask is because I feel that I will be moving on soon due to the low level of pay.. I want to part on good terms but without a contract I need to factor in a notice period before I can move on to a new job. Most new employers want to know your notice period and I don't want to approach my current employer on the issue at this stage..
What is reasonable or leg?
All advice welcome

Much depends on the nature and seniority of the job. Inferring one month's notice would be reasonable as a matter of contract, but as a matter of statute the employer has to give you no more than a week's notice at present. I would suggest that you give a month's notice of departure, but frankly little can be done if you give less.
I'm currently working in retail and the wages are rubbish... I earned more in 1987 as a youngster.. I was shop manager for what it was worth, until the other week when me and a couple of other managers lost our titles as apparently we have been restructured. I keep being told what a good job I am doing and how I am a good member off staff. They couldn't even look me in the face and tell me I have been demoted. I only spotted it by accident when looking at the new staff structure sheet and raised my new title with the md. He said that he didn't feel the need for manager titles in the new structure and therefore removed them without consultation. I would never have been told if I had not of spotted it.
I would say the normal period would be 1 month, and this is what I have used in all my roles. Some companies have a different rule depending on if you are in a probation period which can be as little as a week. You can also find that some companies advise that you might have to give much longer than a month, but I would say that would only really relate to jobs where leaving after a month could have a negative impact to the company.
Can you not ask for a copy of your contract or T&C's? Or just resign and in the letter state that you will work a 1 month notice period.
