I'm looking for a small engined first car. Ideally I'd like a transporter t4 or t5 but they all have big engines and resulting large insurance premiums. I'm 22 but I still haven't finished learning to drive so it should realistically be manual, and given I'll be buying something fairly old and will be driving little petrol seems wise to avoid diesel bills.

I've heard the Honda jazz with magic seats (although I only want them yo fold flat, is good but would appreciate clarification on the civic. Did it get magic seats when it started looking space age in 2006 or so? What about the civics before that? The aerodeck estate from about 2000 looks interesting, do the seats in them fold flat? What about the other recent civic after that?

The civic would have a bigger engine so bigger insurance, but would have more airbags and space.

The focus (ha) is on honda cars due to fold flat seats, butid be delighted RPO hear about other cars with the fold flat sets.

Insurance cost isnt directly related to engine size. You maywell find small cars more expensive than large ones.

Explain more about what you're going to do.

volvo 850/ phase 1 v70 could be slept in.
I'm sure I've read of someone living in a passat estate

Get one of these (the tent not the car) then you're not limited to any car as long as it can take the tent, and probably a more comfy night smile

The berlingo is van based and the rear seats fold into the footwels giving you a fair bit of space. I've also seen a basic camper conversion done.
They're a bit crap (mine is for dump runs and taking the dog out) but so far unkillable, and quite well thought out inside.

Obviously if you don't like the postman pat look they may not be for you.

Volvo estate? Subaru Legacy estate? They come with some smaller engines and the seats fold flat for snoozing.

Cheers for responses so far.

I'm looking for something I can occasionally sleep in overnight at the beach, not something I can live in full time. It would most likely just be me, possibly me and a dog in a few years time.

Apologies for typos.

Get an old post office van or similar or alternatively find something like a Transit that is over ten years old and run it on classic insurance policy.

The upside of the old transit is that they are pretty simple and cheap to maintain and obviously you can kit out the rear however you like. Most importantly all your surf kit can live inside the van and not tied to the roof where it will be stolen in the night because every seaside town in the UK is a dumping ground for scrotes.

Just remember that fixing furniture to the floor is best down in a safe and secure manner rather than just wood screws into the tin panels as done by some VW conversion firms!!!!

Honda S-MX folds flat for this exact purpose. On the downside, import only, so insurance for a 22 year old may be problematic. Nice little 1.6 (auto only IIRC).

A friends son has just been given a little van as a first car, I thinks it's a VW caddy or similar.
I'd say it's a perfect first car, not too quick, no back seat passengers to impress & space in the back for sports gear & kipping at parties rather than drink driving....
Plus it has a yellow beacon for impromptu raves or to let people know you're making jiggy with a lady friend!

surely this is Suzuki Wagon R or Daihatsu Move territory? Have a mate who used to love these things. He'd transport his drum kit in it and him and another friend would basically sleep in it after a night out (far from home, can't afford a hotel, just sleep in the Move! wasn't ideal for bringing girls back mind!).

I've slept in the back of my Discoverys on a fair number of occasions. Ample room for all 5ft 6" of me. An early Discovery TDi or V8 would probably fall under classic insurance now, they were released in 1989.

I've also slept in the MINI, that I definitely don't recommend hehe

Slept in my Mazda MX5 Mk1 once (legs onto dashboard). I couldn't walk the next day as I had a deadleg where I rested on the handbrake!

Classic insurance (in my experience) usually requires the policy holder to be one/some of:
- access another vehicle as a main vehicle
- be over 25
- be on a reasonably limited mileage.
