Afternoon,

Been to look at a Cayamn R (manual) and the vehicle has NO Sports Chrono..

I understand you can have the button retro fitted at OPC?

What does it do and will not having it (the clock on dash) spoil resale?

And lastly, can you get Sports Plus on a manual (only seeing it on PDK) and what does that do?

(sorry, still learning these Cayman things..)

Yes!

In a manual car it will change the throttle map and the car will allow a bit more slip before the stability control kicks in.

With the PDK it will do the same things and actually give you faster shift times, thus improving performance.

I can’t answer the resale question but I would prefer a car without the clock on the dash over one that has it.

The Sports Chrono Plus package is only available with PCM and it adds a performance related gadget (lap time recording?) to the infotainment system. Other than that they are the same. It could be that all the PDK cars you looked at had PCM.

On a manual it doesn't do anything you can't do with your right foot, except for the slip angle thing.

Frankly mine slips enough when provoked as it is. I wouldn't want any more on the road (or the track actually).

I wonder if it makes a bigger difference on cars without LSD?

buy it

makes the throttle how it should feel, and you DO need the slip, the cars to nanny state without sport, I drive 100% in sports mode

Chrono is essential on PDK. Not so important on a man box but nice if it has it.
No big deal without on stick.

Thanks,

Two cars I've seen.. (can't view PDK till end of month)

Car one - CR PDK - Every option....

Car two - CR Man - Sport Exhaust, buckets, Climate

Both same miles, same age, same owners.. But PDK is £3000 cheaper..

Toys and PDK -v- Manual

I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again.

buy a 981 with x73 if you want PDK it's a better car with gen 2 PDK.

point of buying a R is to have the last of the cars with a bit of feel and that inc manual.

It's a car you want to drive, why let it drive you ? you will just end up moving it on quick as it's not very involving.

you state "But PDK is £3000 cheaper.."

that's going to be the future, the cars not a PDK car, PDK market is in the 981 and the upcoming GT4/R not a 987.2 R

market will be dead for PDK on the R and Spyder imo in a few years.

Personally I think its the Sports Chrono should have been standard - The extra slip angle make the car much of a joy to drive on the road, without the need to remove the driver aids completely.

Sports Chrono also gives you an extra 500rpm on the limiter which I do think is needed - far to easy to hit the soft limiter when on the move with the power thats available upto the redline.

I have to say I think you're right. Not the market for PDK thing, but the 'Car to drive' I would of hated my GT3 if it was a PDK. Half the fun was holding the revs up..

and driving involvement aside, the shifting speed and -algorithms of double clutch transmissions will improve with every iteration, thus making the predecessors feel slow and outdated. I don’t think PDK itself will age very gracefully in the light of newer, faster versions with hybrid torque fill and all that jazz.

A good manual will always be a good manual.

^^^ This

On my manual Boxster S the main think the Sport button does is switch on a little red light next to the Sport button...

Mind you, that's still 1,000% more of a performance enhancement than sticking a Sport badge on the back of a Range Rover! smile

Sport mode on a manual will increase throttle response, increase rev limiter and allow more slip before the traction control kicks in

And unlocks extra settings in the pcm, apparently.

Specifically specced my Cayman R without sport chrono because I hate the look of the wart on the dash. I had it on my 911 and hated it.

I did, however have the sport mode retro fitted which gave me that nice extra slip and hard limiter without the wart.

Cost me £680 fitted if I remember but prices vary wildly between OPCs. Swindon was the cheapest and I got Reading to match that price.

I have a PDK equipped R (it's a daily driver circa 600miles a week) and I would not want it without sports chrono because that gives you Sports Plus box and engine mapping. Sport mode is ok for general driving but not enough when you are really on it. The car comes alive in Sport Plus and everything hooks up in an incredible, intense, telepathic way. Turning all sports modes off leaves you in Mway cruise mode.

The clock on the dash is horrid but I look at the road the dash...
