In January I bought a classic Fiat 500 as surprise birthday present for Mrs. Blib. I intended to just polish it up and hand it over. However, as the weeks and months passed I decided to make a few teeny little changes to the car.

Well, one thing led to another and it became necessary to inform the DVLA of the changes. In particular, the colour, a new engine and conversion from LHD to RHD.

Section 7 of the V5 has spaces for the first two. However, I wasn't sure about the steering change and so I phoned Cardiff.

The chap who answered was stumped and went away to ask a supervisor. It turns out that the DVLA are not concerned if one changes the steering wheel from left to right.

As wrote in the title, it is of little general interest. But, I guess it adds to the gaiety of life.

That just confirms how screwed up the DVLA are... I, as qualified engineer, changed the engine in my Westfield from a Crossflow to a Zetec, not only did I have to tell them, but I had to get a letter from a garage to say it had been done, because my word, despite being far more qualified was not enough!

As an aside, I got my MOT man to confirm it when it went in for MOT, only a little place so he did it on an invoice, that meant he had to put a value on it, £0.01, that meant he had to charge me a penny to balance the books. No issue with either of those at all.

When I wrote to the DVLA again with the 'proof' I asked for a refund of the penny and got a first class stamp back in the post!

hehe

That'll be because DVLA don't know which side the steering wheel's on in the first place.

Probably not.
I phoned them last Monday and asked to speak to a Mr S Thomas who is head of the dvla medical department as he wrote me a letter and has revoked my licences, but i was told that no one can speak to Mr S Thomas.

Great, he can revoke both my car and lgv licences after overruling my neuro consultants opinion, but I can't speak to him. Thankyou dvla.
