At the moment she runs about in a 2001 1.6 auto honda civic which only has 72 k on it, was my fathers from new and has only had one issue in 3 years which was diagnosed and fixed for sub £150 ( dead lambda sensor ).

Its easy to drive but dull as dishwater and the 1.6 vtec mated to a 4 speed auto slush box is vague to say the least.

The honda good as it is is probably only worth £1200 max private and maybe £1000 max trade in.

Now we are both the wrong side of 35 with clean driving records so insurance shouldn't be an issue, I have £4000 - £5000 + the civic so some thing sub 6 years old and sub 50k miles should be well within our reach.

New PCP is a no go as we want to own it after 3-4 years not give it back or carry on paying to lease another car.

She likes the suzuki swift, mazda 2 and newer shape fiesta ( yep I know they are the same car )

So guidelines nothing french and having both driven the newer corsa not one of them what else is out there ?

Answers to random questions:

Is she fit ?

Well I look like I was set on fire and then put out with a spade ( more than once ) and she didn't marry me for my money please draw your own conclusions from that.

MX5 !!!!!!! ?

We had one it was aces, we may get another one day but not this time.

Are you a 12 year old on the trolololololol etc ?

Nope and I'm not a powerfully built company director either.

So with all that out the way off you go smile

Nice try but its a no to all three

Alfa: a friend had a 2008 147, the words unreliable, very,at,the, dealer and again were used whenever he talked about it

Wind: nope sorry A its french B who names a car after bottom burbs and C its only a 2 seat.

Hyundai Coupe:good call 2009 just in budget but she wants a hatch with a higher driving position.

Keep it up smile

Isn't that half the fun though? imagine the warm fuzzy glow when it actually starts and you get to drive it!

TBH there not really much other than the usual fare.

OP, did the new car need to be automatic too? I was looking for something similar for my wife a few years ago and we were also looking at the Swift and Mazda 2 but bought a Fiat 500, which was an excellent car. It was only a 1.2 Pop with a few extras but went alright for a 1.2, would happily cruise at 70mph+ all day and do 50mpg. It was also quite fun to drive despite the ride/handling being a bit flawed and a lot more interesting than anything else in our budget.

Don't discount PCP. We bought ours new (RRP just under 10000 pounds) and it was only 100/month over 42 months with a 4000 pound buyout at the end (2000 pound trade in). Not a bad price for a 3.5 year car that you know the history of and the plusher Lounge version wouldn't have been much more (my wife liked the red seats in the Pop though). We sold it to a dealer for 5000 after 3.5 years and 30k as we needed something bigger (although I think they advertised it for 7000), so depreciation is pretty low.

Other than the others you suggest, I think the VW Polo/Seat Ibiza/Skoda Fabia would be my go to choice depending on which you like the look of best/who's offering the best deal. There may be some great deals on the Fabia what with a new model coming out next year. I had one as a hire car once and was pleasantly surprised. I quite liked it. We considered one as a replacement for the Fiat when we finished our PCP (had a baby so needed more space) and at the time they were knocking out mid-spec 5 door 1.2s for less than a basic (and smaller) Citigo. In the end, the wife took my Subaru and I decided to do some "shed" Mercedes-Benz motoring.

If you want bigger still, other than the usual suspects (Focus, Golf). Not a fan of the mk2/3 Focus personally (mk1 is a great car though) unless it's an ST but if your Civic has been good, how about a newer Civic? It looks great to my eyes, bags of space and drives pretty well too and of course it should be boringly reliable. Hyundai/Kia possibly something to consider with their long warranties? The new-shape Rio and Ce'ed both seem like pretty decent cars. Lots of good options out there for your money. Good luck with your search!
