Even in a base spec rental vw caddy van with 47k of abuse miles on it the roads ( if you know where to look ) are still camera free, smooth quick and fun.

When making polite progress ( driving fast but smooth, keeping back but having a look round to see when I could pass) I was also met with decent road manners and slower vehicles / drivers letting me by when speed and road conditions allowed.

The best part is I was being paid for the pleasure smile

I was in South Wales at the weekend I found the standard of driving to be fairly poor and often frustratingly slow but the roads, my god the roads, things of beauty.

That Wales has such a beautiful smooth road network is something of a sore point. The road network across the UK should be of equal standard, instead certain regions get handed everyone elses tax money to make theirs like glass while the rest of us deal with a network in a state of advanced decay.

It doesn't. Trust me. There are a few decent roads in good condition and a VAST number of ste ones falling apart. Head for the sticks and the blacktop turns to crap everywhere I suppose but Wales has a lot of the sticks.

Its Range Rover country, not sports car country.

I've lived in North and South Wales and travelled extensively in the country. Some of it may have got better since I was last there, of course. Depends where you go the experience you'll get, really.

There is a reason why Wales is the Mecca for road rallying you only have to look at the OS maps, it's got the most complex system of rural back roads in the Uk, linked by some fantastically fast B and A roads.

What bks. The fact that your council doesn't wish to maintain their road has nothing to do with others maintaining theirs. The roads are in good condition for the same reason they are great to drive on. The lack of traffic.

Out of holiday season North Wales offers some smooth driving nirvana in places. Between April and October it's frustrating beyond belief.

A LOT of EU money's gone into connecting centres hence the decent roads.

On the downside, a lot of dead people on the roads on a Sunday usually.

I live near the Brecon Beacons in South Wales and i have to travel to shrewsbury for work then on to Llandudno and back home through Snowdonia on the way home. I am actually looking forward to it and i have considered taking the WRX but the sensible side of me tells me i must take the wifes 1.4 Note since I am getting expenses for every mile i put in. That said, i know the run will still be a great one even in the Note, it can be quite fun just trying to keep the momentum going and the roads are bliss.

As for all the roads in Wales being perfect black, smooth tarmac..................i think not!

Depends on the road. Trunk roads are the responsibility of the Highways Agency, not the local council, and there's around 1000 miles of trunk roads in Wales, so that's all the A roads at least.

My council would love to but thanks to low central government grants can't, still get taxed plenty though.

The A470 is hardly a quiet road yet you could iron your shirt on it. Local councils are also not responsible for most trunk roads in England that falls to the highways agency.

Highways agency is an English organisation. Welsh roads are devolved to the Welsh assembly. Same as Scotland
Djc206 needs to focus his soreness on how England manages it's road is my point.

Im 1st generation of Welsh emigrants and have a lot of affection for the place being a frequent flyer

I recall somewhere around the early 90's the wholesale love in of stealth speed camera related gizmos of Taff plod which continues today

Paradoxically whenever I visit, which is often, the standard of driving is abysmal leading me to think that blanket draconian policing does utterly nothing for road safety and general niceness and manners on the road

Cheers

Yes main trunk roads in wales are good but you don't have to travel far to find st roads Newport for example has some shocking roads.

I live in the heart of the welshy valleys and in between the towns there are some fantastic rally type backs roads its what wales is made on.
My favourite route from my home time is up to the heads of valley using my home back route over markham commons then over to hirwaun over the a4059 back to the a470 up to Brecon, Brecon to builth on the b4520, then from builth to elan valley, then elan valley to devils bridge brilliant route hardly any traffic and nobody to bother you police wise.

The reason why some of our roads north of Brecon are so good is simply down to lack of traffic as for example the b4520 I can go from Brecon to builth wells a good 20 mile stretch even at midday sunday can not come across another car on my side of the road and very few going the other way.
